12. No the dumb-ass is a former Marine (E-7) and Drama ACTOR. He should remember that
his character in "Full Metal Jacket" had his shit blown away by none other than Private Pyle.

IMNSHO, truly effective REAL LIFE Marine Drill Sergeants do a much better job at "building up the team" once they've broken down all the individual egos.

Like the fantasy show "24" the character is an exaggeration of a right wing nutcases' wet dreams ... UNREAL. :eyes:

But he needs to move beyond his film persona.

14. Yeah he's dreamy like Jack Bauer?
Sorry, but having served in the AD Army for four years and being the wife of a Marine 18 of the 20 years he was in the service, all that SWAGGER gets old real fast to those of us who have served in uniform and/or family member for any significant length of time.

I'm not saying that being tough and ensuring discipline in one's unit is not important. However, the role that this former Marine plays is well ... over the top. In other words, ONLY if one wishes to be a drill sergeant who gets "FRAGGED" at the very first opportunity, then by all means DO emulate the drill sergeant depicted on "Full Metal Jacket."

THAT KIND of disgusting cruelty with no true sense of purpose but total breakdown of an individual is not something that LEADERS should admire nor model.

The behavior is entertaining when we watch war flicks or fantasy shows like "24" but in THE REAL WORLD these men would not survive, i.e., killed by own men/side for their marked sadistic cruelty.

17. thank you for your service.
i just like Ermey's acting. i didn't mean it as a comment on military training. i just found his performance in Full Metal Jacket entertaining, and i watched his show a couple times on history channel and found something about his personality entertaining.

as for military training and attitudes, i don't really feel qualified to make an assessment, as i have not served myself.

15. Then don't watch Mail Call. I've met him and he's not like his screen persona at all.
He's from my hometown of Emporia, KS. A few years back, he came to town for Veteran's Day (which got it's start in Emporia). He spoke to the crowds for awhile and then signed autographs and posed for pictures. He was a complete 180 from what you see onscreen, very soft spoken and friendly.
