NYC adds man's cancer death to 9/11 victims' toll

By Amy Westfeldt / MSNBC

NEW YORK - A man who died of lymphoma and lung disease more than seven years after he was exposed to toxic dust from the World Trade Center collapse was added to the Sept. 11 death toll, the New York City medical examiner said Friday.

Leon Heyward, 45, died Oct. 13 of lymphoma that was complicated by the lung disease sarcoidosis and the use of the chemotherapy drug cyclophosphamide, the medical examiner's office said.

Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner's office, said Heyward was near the twin towers when they collapsed. She did not say how long Heyward had been ill or whether he worked in the trade center.

His family could not immediately be reached Friday.

Deaths may be reclassified when "people die of disease that is caused by exposure to the dust that occurred in the time of the collapse," Borakove said.

Chief medical examiner Charles Hirsch listed Heyward's death as a homicide. The family did not formally request to add Heyward to the Sept. 11 death toll, Borakove said.

3. RIGHT and This is the way I see it
If every demolition led to a significant amount of laborers developing cancer then no one would be alive today in Las Vegas. I have not read any reports on what is causing this chronic illness in so many rescue workers from NYC. What's the hold up?

13. Didn't the head of the EPA say it was safe?
Even though most people who worked in the area stayed away for a while or bought masks.

6. Thank you for making this post. This is key. So many of the workers who labored
at Ground Zero are coming down with hematological cancers.

This is so sad, but it is providing a key to unlock the puzzle of what is causing Lymphoma, Leukemia and Myeloma.

Thanks again for finding this article. I'm printing this out for my family to see.

7. Christy Whitman killed this man not Bin Laden. The terrorists didn't know the toxicity levels.
Whitman did and didn't tell our heroes in time to save their lives as they cleaned up the dead.
