What can be done: (peak oil primer)
http://www.energybulletin.net/primer.php

Many people are working on preparations for peak oil at various different levels, but there is probably no cluster of solutions which do not involve some major changes in lifestyles, especially for the global affluent. Peak oil presents the potential for quite catastrophic upheavals, but ultimately also some more hopeful possibilities: a chance to address many underlying societal problems, and the opportunity return to simpler, healthier and more community oriented lifestyles.

Assuming peak oil is true, with current conditions also slowing our usage... nice optimism too, I'll let you know if that happens. :D

2. We have all the energy we need
Between Hydro, Solar, Geo Thermal, Tidal and Coastal Wave power we have all the clean and constantly renewable energy we need. The problem isn't with technology its with monetary-ism and a lack of scarcity.

Hemp as well as other crops and coal deposits could supply us with the raw chemicals needed which is currently supplied by refined oil. We could probably find other ways to replace coal as well.

We have everything we need to maintain current living standards and without all the toxic environmental damage. But, again, the problem isn't with technology its with monetary-ism and a lack of scarcity to drive profits and political power.

That's my opinion.

3. what can be done and what WILL be done are two very different things.
until something completely catastrophic happens, neither people nor politicians will have the courage to do what is necessary- and by the time the completely catastrophic shit starts happening- it will be WAY too late to do anything but watch and die.

it's going to be a wilder and wilder ride from here on out.
