My first memory of being a "Democrat." And, no, I'm not ashamed.
Edited on Tue Jan-13-09 08:02 PM by Mike 03
As some of you know, my father has terminal cancer, so this past year has been a time for reflection, remembering and appreciating him and my mother as well. They are true liberals, and I am so proud of them. My mother opposed racism before it was fashionable, and I sat on my father's shoulders as he walked me across a bridge after MLK was killed.

My earliest memory of being conscripted into Democratic duty must have been when George McGovern was running for president. I wish I could remember the exact month. I was really, really young, but I'm assuming it must have been 1972?

My dad had assigned me to put McGovern literature on the windshields of cars in New Jersey, and a police office came by, rounded us up and warned us. We were warned we would be arrested if we didn't stop, and I remember vaguely, for a fleeting moment, fearing that we actually might all be arrested.

We were not, but that is how I remember my parents: Fighting for the underdog.

1972?

1. Yes, 1972. That was the first campaign I was actively involved in, too.
It killed me to see Nixon's electoral landslide.

2. I was 5yrs old and got down on my knees and begged...
My parents to vote for Kennedy. One of them did. This year the other one finally voted for Obama.

3. The police threaten me when I nailed up posters for Harry Truman to telephone posts. But
they left and I kept on going. Still call myself a Truman Democrat.

Damn, I'm old.
