What the job figures don't include is all the people entering the job

On average, about 100k people enter the job market each and every month. they aren't included in the job figures because there is o clear cut way to measure those individuals.

So really, the 2.6 million jobs lost in 2008 is really 1.2 million short.

That is one reason why some of the talking heads are reporting that the real figure could be 9-10% already.

1. Do they take into account self employed who don't pay into unemployment and aren't

eligible for those benefits?

They have an idea based on tax filings from the previous year.

3. This point should be shouted from the rooftops.

Most people, myself included, do not routinely add these numbers into the unemployment figures...

And when I do think about those folks entering the dismal job market, my concern for our country's future increases.
