Last update: 1:49 p.m. EST Dec. 23, 2008Comments: 15
SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Thierry Magon de la Villehuchet, a fund manager who reportedly lost large sums in Bernard Madoff's alleged $50 billion Ponzi scheme, was found dead in a New York office building, according to media reports Tuesday. A New York City Medical Examiner spokeswoman told Reuters that de la Villehuchet, 65, was pronounced dead at 8 am Eastern, and that the cause of death was not known. He co-founded Access International Advisors LLC, which specializes in managing hedged and structured-investment portfolios.

You dont know what he was going through. It must be nice to be so perfect that you feel able to judge people who are driven to suicide. :eyes: Unreal.

Did you ever lose it? Because unless you have, you can't have empathy either.

67. I know. But I wasn't just trying to mess with you. There's a larger point.
I think I'm safe in assuming that no one on DU can empathize with this guy. But the degree to which we sympathize is by definition dependent on what we imagine the life of someone who founded a hedge fund company would be and what would drive him to suicide. Did he do it out of remorse for carelessly destroying so many lives, or out of fear for having done so deliberately?

Empathy vs Sympathy

Empathy- intellectual & emotional awareness and understanding of another person's thoughts, feelings, and behavior even that are distressing
emphasizes understanding
Sympathy- sharing another's feelings especially in sorrow or trouble through imaginative identification with the other's situation
emphasizes sharing of another persons feelings and experiences

http://faculty.mc3.edu/rbenfiel/NUR109/NUR109Caring/tsld014.htm

As the friend of someone whose father committed suicide, I can certainly sympathize with those left behind in the wake of this particular case. But it's hard for me to extend that sympathy to those directly involved in a $50 billion Ponzi scheme. If I found out Madoff committed suicide, I would have the same trepidations. Not all victims are innocent.

The charities did the EXACT same thing he did. Him = bad. Charities = good. Why? Because he killed himself.

Nice logic.

Former Enron exec dies in apparent suicide
January 26, 2002 Posted: 11:47 AM EST (1647 GMT)

SUGAR LAND, Texas (CNN) -- Former Enron Corp. vice chairman J. Clifford Baxter was found dead in his car in a Houston suburb early Friday, the victim of an apparent suicide, police said.

Baxter made millions on the sale of Enron stock, but reportedly was unhappy with Enron's business practices and resigned as vice chairman in May. He had remained as an Enron consultant.

Enron, once a giant energy corporation, has collapsed in the biggest bankruptcy filing in U.S. history amid accusations of mishandling of funds and shredding of crucial documents. Enron and its accounting firm, Andersen LLP, are under congressional investigation.
