I know this is a terrible time in our history but life must go on (at least without those thugs in the white house) so i have a mundane question to ask. I bought a dell 18 months ago - the circuit board was replaced twice, the hard drive once and now the lcd monitor has burned out. Nothing from Dell of course so f.. em. I need something light and small for school and Lenovo seems to be the only one who offers puters like that for a reasonable price. Does anyone here own one or heard any horror stories about them. Appreciate any comments. Thanks

a laptop and I have had no problems at all. Hubby owns a Dell - non-stop problems.

what kind of specs are you looking for?

Honestly if for "school" you mean typing up papers and surfing the web you could probably just get by with an Asus EeePC.

If by "school" you also mean video games, movies, and other such entertainment then not so much.

2gig ram hd 120 or so usb sockets (at least 3) and good ethernet card. Must be light small and compact. Does your suggestion fit the billing? Thanks

9. My Lenovo is from China, and my Dell is from Malaysia

Most laptops are made in East Asia. Even the ones from Taiwan have a high content from China. The Japanese brands probably have the lest Chinese content, but are typically not manufactured in Japan.

Dell and HP are largely marketing companies that do some design and specification work. They do relatively little manufacturing.

The companies that manufacture servers, routers, desktops, etc, are either East Asian companies or manufacturers like Solectron, Sanmina, Flextronics, Jabil, Celestica, etc.

Our country is so screwed up with most of our export money going to China these days.

I'd rather send my money pretty much anywhere but China if I have a choice. Taiwan, Japan, whatever, its better than sending it to China.

7. They are the old IBM think-pad division sold off to the Chinese.

IBM realized that there was going to be little profit margins in laptops (becoming a commodity item), and companies were no longer willing to pay a premium for higher quality designs, so they sold it off. Ironically, this was around the same time Carly & HP was spending billions to BUY Compaq (money they'll never get back).

The early Lenovos were really just IBM Think-pads and were solidly built and good machines. Now, they are much more cheaply built.

11. I have a lenovo R61e with XP

I was able to get XP instead of Vista, a memory upgrade too for about $550. Google for a coupon - I got $100 off.

I liked the ThinkPads because they're sturdy and reliable - the one I had through work lasted forever - it still runs, it's just out of date. I had a compaq that was a piece of shit that cost much more than this.

12. Dell is crap. Cheap crap.

Lenovo makes the Thinkpad line now, which used to be the very best laptops you could buy when IBM had them. I haven't extensively tried Lenovo's versions. I had one for a few weeks: it had other things which annoyed me, but I didn't object to the build quality. I know a lot of people continue to be fond of them, and when Lenovo bought the line they made a big deal about maintaining the Thinkpad reputation for quality.

13. The ThinkPads are still really great.

They're not too much different from the old IBM ThinkPads, which are very good. The IdeaPads... not so much.
