$4,000 for 100 hours of community service?
I am willing to do that, more if needed, to be able to get help paying for my education.
I just hope...that it happens, and that it happens soon.
So thank you, President-elect Obama, for having a great idea :7

And the idea of reforming "No Child Left Behind" sounds great, because that stuff doesn't work.

5. My youngest will be going to our county college

As of right now, a full load of 13 credit hours would be about $500/semester, I believe. So, hell, yeah, it would pay for a large chunk of her schooling.
My oldest went to a Texas state university...a single semester for her was just over $4000 and THAT was just tuition....difference being, the oldest knew exactly what degree/career she wanted, my youngest has NO idea what she wants to be/go to school for. So it is in everyone's be$t intere$t for her to go locally til she figures something out.

3. I hope he is actually able to do this one.
I have a daughter who is a Junior in high school. This amount would totally pay for community college and put a good dent in the university tuition for years 3 and 4. It would lift a great burden off us and she is more than willing to put in 100 hours of service. Hell, I would put in 100 hours myself to help pay for it. Things are really hard here in Michigan.

6. You are in for a shock!
$4000 dollars probably wouldn't even cover the total cost to attend a community college in Michigan. In fact, it would probably only cover the cost of books/supplies for the entire four years of college.

The cost to attend a state university in Michigan is astronomical (especially if that includes board). The approximate annual cost to attend MSU is $20,000. This includes: in-state tuition and fees, room and board, books and supplies, and estimated personal expenses. YIKES! Even commuter colleges, like WSU, are pricey.

That being said, every bit counts! We also have the Michigan Promise Scholarship, which kicks in up to another $4000 (if a student qualifies). I also like the idea of serving the community.

7. Our local community college (Schoolcraft) is $73.00 per credit hour.
So an Associates Degree would be around $4,400. plus books. His plan would help to more than cover the first two years which would give us more time to save for the second two years at a university. She will be going to a local private college for the second two years and that would be costly, but no room and board fees. I am not "in for a shock" because we have already put one daughter through five years of college and I know every little bit helped us a lot. She is now a teacher and is doing well. The Michigan Promise Scholarship will also help so much. In any case, we will always end up with some of the cost of student loans as all of the schools are so expensive. But what choice do we have?
