Shopping While Black
My friend Nate (African American) and I were hanging a door in my home...Nate is a seventy four year old retired career veteran with Bronze Stars from Korea and Viet Nam. I am a white guy in my forties... This venture has required several trips to Lowes...While we were shopping there was a couple and a baby shopping...They were a couple of feet away from their cart...The husband said to the wife in a voice loud enough for us to hear " you better watch your purse"...Nate said to me " they don't trust us."... I have learned so much from that man...He's like a dad to me... I wasn't sure about the remark but if I was sure that man had bad intentions I would have let him know if he was four times the man he is or thinks he is , he isn't one half the man my friend Nate is...

3. Or maybe the comment was made about no one in particular?
Did the woman have the purse on her person, or did she leave it in a shopping cart a distance away (even a few feet is enough).

I go shopping with a female friend of mine all time and she's constantly asking me to keep an eye on her handbag for her if it's going to be out of her reach or eyesight for more than a few seconds (even in a near empty store).

If she didn't ask me, I'd be the one cautioning her about her slip-up.
