Poll question: That's it- shutting down the poll
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 04:29 PM by BullGooseLoony
Here lies an attempt to show widespread agreement on a general principle that people once again could not just come in and say "YES!" to, but had to dissect as if it was statutory.

Yeah, but blah, blah, yadda yadda, and I further think this and that. Oh, and I hate people that think this thing here.

Forget it, I'm going to get some coffee.

1. One caveat: persons involved need to be ADULTS.
I don't agree with minors marrying.

3. That's implicit in the idea of choice.
Children can't make voluntary legal decisions.

9. It's actually legal for minors to marry in some states. I don't agree with that,
even if it's ok with the parents.

12. Yeah but you need to look at your wording.
There's nothing about it being a MUTUAL choice. You may think it goes without saying, but it doesn't. If I'm entitled to marry the person of my choice, and he doesn't agree with me? You still give me the right. Writing law is ever so tricky.

The mutual choice of consenting adults.

11. well then get pissed off
you could have put a simple yes or no if you didn't want responses. it should be understood that we're talking about consenting adults, but can i help it if i flashed on the FLDS when i saw that someone had voted for something else? shit.

7. I said yes, but I need to qualify that marriage should be between
consenting adults of the same species. Please don't marry your pet goat and no children under the age of consent either. Well I think there is also a question of incest to be addressed. Just how close of a relative should you legally be allowed to marry?

8. I support Arranged Marriages by families
After all, Marriage evidently is NOT about love, devotion, and capatability since those are never mentioned in the arguments for marriage.

Marriage is ABOUT procreation and procreation only.

Therefore parents have the burden to find someone that is in a family who simply is best to procreate with. That other family should be well bred, educated, have viable income, and not prone to social ills like alcohol, adultery, or free-will.

This way the children of the children are then assured of a good household to live in and will be raised with no expectations that love/romance has anything to do with marriage. Only the Sexual Act.. the grand and glorious sanctified Sexual Act that is only done to begat children.. never for passion or intimacy only.

Arranged Marriages for all.

I need 600,000 signatures to get on the next California ballot.

10. I agree in principle, but if laws can be made to create true equality
.....between the institution of marriage and legal rights for everyone involved in long term relationships, the term marriage becomes a moot point.

The right wingers are using that term to formulate a wedge issue, but its not the term people should be fighting over (that just feeds into the right's argument), its whether the legal status for people in long term relationships are equal under the law with marriage.
