By Paul Abelsky

Nov. 7 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., the world's biggest carmaker, opened a $300 million factory in Russia as it looks to compensate for slumping sales in western Europe and North America.

The plant in the Shushary district on the outskirts of St. Petersburg will produce 70,000 Chevrolet Captiva sport-utility vehicles and the Opel Astra, with plans to manufacture the Chevrolet Cruze compact car next year.

``Our strategy is to become the leading manufacturer in Russia,'' Carl-Peter Forster, GM's chief for Europe, told reporters during the plant opening today. ``For us Russia is not an emerging market. Russia emerged long ago.''

The new plant ``is an example of a good investment project that's oriented toward the future,'' Russian President Dmitry Medvedev told reporters. He called on GM to boost output at the plant.

1. This is all about wages

GM would rather hire foreigners due to the fact that they demand less for work, yet they wish we Americans should bail them out????? Talk about a lack of loyalty to one's own country.... what a slap in the face.

because GM wants a bailout here.

They also quit making the Volt here and started making Hummers, etc in Russia around 2001 or 2002.

5. And what is the problem with this?
It's a lot less expensive to make cars where they are bought. Why do you think Toyota opens plants in the USA?

They were just making an ordinary business decision.

If GM goes down, we will probably be in a depression. Maybe we need to let them fail, but it won't be a fun prospect, I can assure you.

7. The problem is...
Only Americans should have cars. Who the hell do these former commies think they are anyway?

Russians are supposed to put Americans to work.

:sarcasm:

8. That's logical thinking
Make the vehicles where they're selling, just like why Toyota has a plant in the US...and why VW is planning to open a plant in TN soon.

11. It was senior GM executives that participated in the plot against FDR
and tried their best to rip up the light rail infrastructure.

Now these rat bastards want us to bail them for bad business decisions?

Feh!

12. The problem with not bailing out the American auto companies...
is that the people responsible won't end up suffering. The executives will take their golden parachutes and other compensation and walk away fine. They won't suffer a bit - except for maybe a bruised ego. It's going to be middle and working class people that are going to get beaten to a pulp.

As I can see it, the only way to protect American workers and exert some influence on the management of the these companies is through a government bailout. I absolutely think that major concessions need to be demanded, and one of them must be the protection of American jobs from offshoring and outsourcing.

13. Take the 25 Billion and use it to start a single-payer health care system.
Edited on Sat Nov-08-08 08:32 PM by formercia
The GM employees can be the first to enroll.

The Federal Government can administer it for 5 cents on the dollar instead of the 25 cents or so the private GM system would cost.
