If you had any doubt about the politics of the Spitzer set up

Federal prosecutors said Thursday that they will not bring criminal charges against Eliot Spitzer for his role in a prostitution scandal, removing a huge legal cloud that has surrounded the former governor since his epic downfall eight months ago.

U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia said investigators found no evidence that Spitzer or his office misused public or campaign funds for prostitution. Federal prosecutors typically do not prosecute clients of prostitution rings.

"In light of the policy of the Department of Justice with respect to prostitution offenses and the longstanding practice of this Office, as well as Mr. Spitzer's acceptance of responsibility for his conduct, we have concluded that the public interest would not be further advanced by filing criminal charges in this matter," Garcia said in a statement.

A remorseful Spitzer issued a statement in which he expressed relief that he would not face charges.

Isn't the timing amazing? I hope Obama finds a place for Spitzer in the new government.

2. Spitzer was warning about the financial instability before he was 'caught'...
besides, our society ALWAYS forgives men caught with prostitutes.

4. Especially forgiving are politician's wives
They're always standing beside them at their "I'm sorry" press conferences.

My wife would be burning my clothes on the front yard.

3. I thought the same thing when I heard this news.
Oh the timing was very amazing.

I don't think that Obama is going to place Spitzer in his government at this time. It is still a very raw subject and would only give the conservatives ammunition against his (Obama's) morality.

5. Yes And Yes...
Yes, this scandal was exposed for political purposes. Of anyone in the political world, he knows all the games that were going on on "The Street" and was a threat. However, as Governor of New York, what real power would he have had to prevent what happened?

The part that can't be forgotten is here is a man who broke laws he was prosecuting others for. He was careless in leaving a paper trail which all but begged for him to be exposed. His lack of judgement can't be excused for political purposes.

11. Can't argue with that
but Vitter and Craig are still in the Senate...and the convicted Stevens may be re-elected.

12. Let's Not Play The Equivelent Game
Craig is gone in January...watch for his World Tour '09...coming out soon!

It's mind-boggling that Alaskans could re-elect this crook and Don Young...but let's see if there wasn't some tampering with the numbers up there...the polls and low turn-out just don't pass the smell test.

I was glad to see Maloney go down in Florida and if there's any Democrat stupid enough to get their "tits caught in the ringer", we must hold them accountable regardless of how the GOOP deals with theirs. That's a big part they're on the outside looking in now.

9. You're gonna have to do better than that and...
explain how Spitzer's poisoned relationship with his own party in Albany had nothing to do with his downfall.

Spitzer was failing as a Governor when he got caught, and no Republicans or Wall Street tycoons had much to fear from him. Even as AG, he slowed down on the prosecutions around the time he thought about running for Governor.

16. It would take a while to dig up all the gossip...
from then, but living here you pick up a lot, usually just a paragraph in the Times or a slip on local TV news.

Anyway, this bigshot started out by insulting Pataki in his inauguration speech, blaming him for everything that had gone wrong, and right in front of not only Pataki, but Pataki's Republican supporters in the legislature. After being a take no prisoners prosecutor (and kinda forgetting some of the other things the NY AG is supposed to be doing) he thought he'd just waltz in and call the shots from the Governor's mansion.

Waytago, genius. It doesn't work that way in New York.

New York had for years been held hostage by Democrat Sheldon Silver in the Assembly and Republican Joe Bruno in the Senate. Every Governor has had to kiss both their asses and beg and whine to get anything done. Major kissing of the ass of the other party, but your own guy has demands, too. It was a bottleneck that everyone agreed sucked, but nobody could do anything about it-- Silver was untouchable in the Bronx and Bruno was untouchable somewhere upstate and their seniority could never be touched. And NY rules meant they controlled everything in a Mexican standoff.

Even though Cuomo, Pataki, and other governors couldn't get past these two, our fearless prosecutor ignored history and started telling them how things work-- and pissed of just about everyone by holding up the works even more than they normally get held up.

So, the whole mess was turning into serious gridlock and hatreds were building up when, surprise, surprise, Spitzer gets caught with a hooker. I don't say that wasn't a coincidence, but did the tip trace back to Albany?

(All politics really is local-- never forget that.)

13. Gee, that was a great excuse. The real reason is, they could not use
the evidence because it was gathered ILLEGALLY.

The man who ratted Spitzer has a tattoo of Nixon on his back.
