The Morning After...my morning coffee klatsch with a Repuke....
I walked in to "The Station" (it's what we call the convenience store/deli in town) and the usual crew was assembled there in the booths. I got my cup of decaf and my daily newspaper...sporting a giant picture of Obama with the headline "YES WE DID!" emblazoned across the top and sat down without saying a word.

One of the older gentlemen, a regular there, turned to me and said in a flat and lifeless voice "Well...you won." Now, thanks to a DU thread last night, I had already prepared the perfect response (I can't remember the DU'er's name so apologies to that brilliant person).

I said "No. We ALL won. I know it's hard for you to see that right now, and difficult to accept, but I hope in time that you will see that."

He said "You REALLY believe that?"

Me: "Yes I do. I would not have taken money away from family's budget to give to that campaign if I did not believe in that message. I would not have taken time away from my children to knock on doors of complete strangers if I did not believe it was for a greater purpose. I would not have taken a day off of work, and sacrificed a day's earnings if I didn't know in my heart it wasn't going to benefit my children's future."

He sat and looked at me for a moment. I don't know what I was expecting him to do. It surprised me when he said, in a quiet voice, "I hope you're right."

1. The concept of putting your resources (time, money) into supporting your candidate
does get Repub attention.

Great response.

5. I sure hope I did. I knew there'd be a confrontation with someone there...
there's a load of republican regulars there...but I swore I was not going to gloat.

6. You handled that very well. Beautifully.
I wish I had been as prepared with a similar comeback for my repub coworkers who are convinced we are now to be taken over by commies.

11. I do too.
Although I've been trying to put myself in their shoes --- thinking how I felt in 2004 and how sure I was the country was going to go to ruin (and well, it almost has....). But I truly believe things are going to get better now. I wish they could share my hope.

But trying to understand the Fundie Right mindset is not worth the struggle, I don't think. They are just warped.

9. My husband has had several similar conversations at work today

He's the only latino face in a sea of (republican) white. A lot of people have approached him and said "guess you won" and he's responded similarly... "No, we've all won... all of us."
