I buried an "I voted" sticker at the foot. She and my Daddy didn't cripple me with racism. It was all around, and I know I had to pick up some. However, I try to be aware. At my house growing up in the 50's and early 60's, I didn't hear hate 24/7. My Mama loved the Kennedys. Daddy was an enigma, but he was a kind man.
Mama hated it when we would visit relatives and they would start their shit. She really hated it when they got going with their Jeebus spouting. She taught Sunday School, and she really knew her Bible. I'd ask her if Jesus would like that shit. She just purse her lips and say no. She hung a light blue flag with the word "Shalom" on the outside of the house. Mama got one of those companies to personalize a brazillion pens with her initials and the word "Shalom" on them. Gave them to everybody.
I remember when I was little, we went to Sears or something. They had the water fountains with the words "colored" over one and "white" over the other. I always went to the one that said "colored. I distinctly remember being pissed when the water wasn't red, white and blue.
I think Mama would have liked Barack. I know she would have liked me following my conscience.
Here's to you Mama and Daddy! "Love"
