Sen. Edward M. Kennedy is returning to Washington later Tuesday, but there was no word for certain on whether he will be spending much time at his Capitol Hill office or participate in the lame duck session of Congress beginning on Nov. 17.
“There’s a possibility that he may come into the office once or twice, but that’s a decision that will be made on a day to day basis,” said Kennedy spokesman Anthony Coley.
Coley added that no decision had been made yet on whether the Massachusetts Democrat would participate in a lame-duck Senate session. But he said Kennedy will continue to discuss health care reform plans with the Barack Obama presidential campaign and his own staff.
Kennedy had surgery in June to remove a brain tumor and has been undergoing cancer treatment ever since at his home in Hyannis Port. He will continue his treatment in Washington, where, Coley said, he wanted to be on election night to watch the returns with friends and family.
The news of his return did come as a surprise to some. Early last month, his office said he would likely remain in Massachusetts until the 111th Congress convenes in January.
In the past, there have been concerns that a trip to the Democratic convention in Denver and outings away from Massachusetts may have impacted his health. But Coley said
Kennedy’s doctors “are very pleased with his progress.”
