Stalking the Shadows: A sincere entreaty to Republican voters to look within.
Edited on Tue Oct-28-08 10:08 AM by shadowknows69
Seven days from Election Day, an election both sides seem to agree is historical in its urgency to elect the right person. Only seven days until we all do our civic duty and decide the fate of our nation. Not just the Republican nation or the Democratic nation but The United States, where most of us have lived all of our lives.

Look within yourselves, past party lines, past State borders, past even your own upbringing and beliefs, if you can, and ask yourself, quite simply, what America is to you? You can Google the Declaration of Independence or The Constitution if you want for reference, it’s an open book test, but the television is not an acceptable resource so turn it off. Read them again, get acquainted with your country again. This is your Bible and it wasn’t written by King James or King George of any century.

Now that you’ve accepted the basic tenets of our country once again, close your eyes for a moment and ask yourself does America look like that anymore? Do you believe that the politics of hate, the alarming distance between the classes, and the fact that there are still “classes” of Americans at all, is keeping with the spirit of all citizens being equal? Do you really believe, even if you are one of the “blessed” few with wealth in this country that it is fair that corporations and people in your bracket get tax breaks the middle class only dream of in some debunked myth that the money will trickle down from heaven instead of the piss they’re used to? Do you really believe that a half-black man with a funny name who is in fact the epitome of the American Dream is actually a threat to this great nation that he owes everything to? If you still hold these fears and delusions to be true then I believe there’s little hope for you and you probably should vote for the Grand Old Party once again and hope the horrifying reality of the status quo won’t some day reach your doorstep. You should probably start playing the lottery too and stay out of potential lightning storms.

If, however, you still believe in “real Americans” to paraphrase Michelle Bachman, then you know they’re still right where they’ve always been. They are your neighbors, your children’s teachers, the police, the fire department, your mail carrier, your daycare worker, your priest, your rabbi, your butcher, your plumber (Hi Joe!), and your doctor. Whether they are of the same party, religion, race or the same home town, they are the same people you’ve accepted as fellow citizens all your life and so is Barack Obama. If you truly believe the words of The Founders that were wiser than the men who wrote them, then you can make no other choice this election than to vote for Barack Obama for President.

If you believe in America and its ideals you must know in your heart that your party, or the people who have hijacked it, have turned this nation toward ruin with few options of righting our rudder in time. You have to know that your candidate will continue the backwards motion of this beloved nation of ours. You have to see that the only way to alter our trajectory is for real change, as cliché as that is becoming even to some of us Democrats I must confess, it is the absolute truth.

We cannot continue to level the main tax burden at the middle class in a predominantly consumer economy or the whole house of cards will fall. If only Christmas was in September this would be painfully apparent before the election. We can no longer afford our occupation of Iraq at current levels and we need leaders who will no longer work unilaterally of our dwindling supply of allies. It is vital that we appear on the world stage as fleeing from the policies of the last eight years if we are to recover any standing at this time when it is so absolutely necessary that we have support. The global economy is coming apart at the seams and we need a steady hand in dealing with it. If there’s one thing you have to admit about your candidate, and there’s video proof if you can’t, is that his hand has been anything but steady in the campaign and there’s little evidence that he would improve once in office.

Republicans, I implore you, don’t let your party be defined by the hatred and race baiting that has taken place in this campaign. This will be a hard pill to swallow but the only way to save your party and perhaps this nation is to help Barack Obama become President. Put loyalty to country over your loyalty to party and see deep within that change really is the best choice. I’ve known many Republicans in my days that are genuinely good people, just Americans like the rest of us. We should continue to agree to disagree on many issues because rational political discourse is what helps to evolve a country but your party, not the country, needs a civil war. I fully believe the Democratic Party needs one too, and that will probably take place with an Obama win as well. Obama has shown already that he can bridge the gap between parties in many ways. We need to find our center as a country again to actually bring Right and Left a little closer. I’m no fan of centrist politics by any means but I think it’s a necessity at this point in our history or we may figuratively and maybe literally tear ourselves apart.

Perhaps once we can come together under an Obama administration we can start to heal as a nation because we sorely need it. The choice is yours to help us build a new future or reward the same crew that has started us on a spiral into unknown and insecure futures. Murky and turbulent waters we’re not currently seaworthy enough to be sailing in. We’re all in the same boat, The USS U.S.A. Let’s all put out for calmer waters and kinder winds than we’ve had the last eight years. Help us sail into history together.

1. 'there are still “classes” of Americans at all'
Good point, too many people just take for granted that there are classes, and think that it is morally acceptable for there to be such a disparity in wealth that there are classes, and not just two classes. McCain cries "class warfare" with the implicit assumption that there SHOULD be classes, and that the lower classes should just shut up and accept being downtrodden and exploited, they should just "know their place".

It took me a while to find a well written post. I've spent several days on this site, slate, wonkette, daily kos , and all i found was immature virulent hate spewing nonsense. I don;t have the time or energy to waste my time to respond if your PC police will delete all dissent.

as per: This is a moderated discussion forum with rules. We have a team of volunteer moderators who delete posts and ban disruptors. Members are strongly urged to familiarize themselves with our rules, and make an effort to become a positive member of our community. Those who do not risk having their posts deleted or their posting privileges revoked.

Just one of the more obvious mis-statement you make is: "your party be defined by the hatred and race baiting that has taken place in this campaign." -- No matter how lousy McCain is - the one who has brought up race and in a quite slick manner, is Obama. The only one who is bought and paid for is NOT McCain - heck he only raised - what $87 mil to Obama's $600 Mil - where do you think that came from? Little ole ladies? He makes any corrupt repub look like a 6 year old !! Since I expect you folks have no perspective re: money - Both candidates in 2004 (Bush & Kerry remember) only raised $200 mil.
