Food Bank Friday! October 24, 2008
Please remember your local food bank when you go grocery shopping this weekend!

Print out the flyer below and make copies for your friends, family or co-workers to take with you when you go grocery shopping.

(Or surreptitiously leave copies at the grocery store!)

You don't have to pick up everything on the list, just remember to pick up something.

Halloween is next week, does anyone have any suggestions for donating...
* costumes?
* trick or treat bags or plastic pumpkins?
* ???

Other ways you can help

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) http://www.chiron-communications.com/farms.html

Second Harvest http://www.feedingamerica.org/?show_nce=1

Find and donate "free after rebate" items offered by many stores http://www.salescircular.com/

Thanksgiving Tip (from DUer central scrutinizer: many grocery stores offer cheap frozen turkeys - as low as $.19 per pound - if you buy over a certain amount, often $75 or $100. I take advantage of this to get a big turkey for a really low price and donate it to the food bank. I don't eat meat but don't mind buying it for those who do.

This winter will be pretty bad in some areas, so even if you can't make it to the food bank, send money or help out when you can.

And, last, but not least, please support candidates and policies that guarantee livable wages.

1. Good way to celebrate an election!
IF we succeed on Election Day, a new spirit of giving and volunteering would be a wonderful way to back up our blogs!

12. Good reason for me to give this a kick
All we have is each other. I was the store yesterday and helped out the woman in front of me who had run short of cash and had her debit card declined. It wasn't much but I wasn't going to stand by and let someone go without.

When I was in law school a club I was in got people to donate toys for the holidays to the homeless shelters and transitional care services. Any toys that came in "late" were donated to the hospital for the children's ward. One year we teamed up with a food pantry and another group that was getting winter clothes and blankets. We made sure that people had food, clothes, blankets and that the kids had toys.

20. I forgot to mention that donations are up also. People are becoming more aware
that their neighbors are in need.

We also donate about 150 bags of groceries to a church that tries to feed the homeless. There are a lot of homeless including children.

13. Please also check if your local food bank has a clothes closet
to give any outgrown or old but still good clothing to. Also if someone in your family has an old wheelchair or walker that they no longer need see if there is a group in your community that will take it to lend out. When my Dad had cancer & was too weak to walk we were loaned a wheelchair so we didn't have to buy one or try to argue insurance into buying one. We were so very grateful for that help.
