I need some help here people - My daughter's principal is nuts
Okay...

My little girl will be 8 next month, she is in the third grade... yesterday she came home from school with an assignment from the principal... It's due tomorrow...

She has to make a poster that shows 50... FIFTY different ways to say NO TO DRUGS.

This is an assignment given to several kids in each classroom. This so sucks. I can think of maybe 3 ways to say no to drugs... I will be in poster HELL later today and I need you guys to feed me some lines here...

I find this sort of "project" to be OVER THE FUCKING TOP. Maybe some of you know of a LOL Cat or something????

here she is with her brother:

16. That was my first idea...
I told my little baby that and she almost started crying... She takes this shit waaaaaay too seriously.

I also think it's pretty damned stupid.

(my husband, a fed prosecutor) told her that if she didn't say no to drugs he would put her in prison and told her to use that 50 times with a picture of him on the poster... Yikes... i don't think so, but thanks Daddy.

17. Just tell her to come up with 50 ways to say "no"
to this stupid project: yell "NO!" throw it in the trash can, walk away, run away, etc. When she's done, she can substitute the word "drugs" for the project.

Yes, it's a stupid idea. Few eight year olds have the vocabulary to come up with 50 ways to say the same thing and just as few really know what drugs are. The addition of such a short time limit is just cyanide icing on a strychnine cake.

I have a feeling the principal is the one with the problem here. I hope he gets some help.

36. It'd take more than too much make-up to make that good-looking kid look like McCain.
Peter Pan would be easier. Superboy. Even Spiderman.

For a really daring (drawing outside the lines) costume, let him go as Wednesday (of the Addams Family) ... if cross-dressing doesn't offend or is some kind of taboo. If that's taboo, let him do Gomez.

He just ain't the "scare" type. Hug magnet. Not scary.

22. I'd get creative on that principal...
Your daughter should write, "You don't need 50 ways to say no to drugs. You just
need to say "NO!" once and believe in the power of your own voice."

It's a lot less work than a list of 50!

Good luck! I have an eight-year old too!

Cute kids...they look very close in age.

:hi:

...and I know the feeling. My two girls (ages 7 and 8), are 15 months apart. When my oldest was 6 months, we
found out we were pregnant with our second and I think I was in shock until they were about 2 and 3!

Do drugs? Are you joking?
I'd rather be choking!
I'm saving my body for sports!
My father would KILL ME!
Just KEEP IT, don't bill me!
I've read all the latest reports!
>Are YOU such a loser
A dope and a boozer?
Get lost and don't bother to call!
My head is not hollow!
I won't take a swallow!
No, NEVER, NOT ONCE, NOT AT ALL!!
"21">Get high, like a rocket?
Your brain's in your pocket
And you've sent all your marbles to space,
If you think for a minute
That I'd dive right on in it,
Just by the blank stare on my face!

Yes - it is red ribbon week (I think... Hell, I think so... wtf do I know?)

And her parent goes out for a drug (alcohol is indeed a drug) while getting the materials for the poster.

33. I wish schools wouldn't do this.
This is the kind of crap that makes kids hate school. NO ONE likes being given an overwhelming assignment they can't do on their own. This particular assignment will also tend to make some of them MORE, not less, curious about drugs. Bad idea.

Did they mention which drugs? It didn't sound like it, so pick LEGAL ones, prescription ones, perhaps drugs that have been pulled off the shelf. Maybe make references to how the kid doesn't want XYZ side effect.

Good thinking on your part.

50. I think you've already got some good suggestions, but
what is the deal with that anyway? They are starting in kindergarten telling them to just say no too. My kids don't even know what drugs are so now I have to explain it (my oldest is in 2nd grade). I can see telling 5th and 6th graders because they're soon going into middle school, but the earlier grades seem crazy to me. Of course I grew up in L.A. myself, but where we live now my kids are much more sheltered than I was. I think sometimes too much info isn't necessarily good.

Very cute kids btw!

No thank you
No gracias
Negative

54. These types of projects are unfair to kids with families who work or aren't educated.
This is so ridiculous. What child can think of fifty different ways to say anything? Who needs to?

Nobody needs to say no to drugs fifty different ways. One way, repeated fifty times if necessary, is sufficient.

55. It's red ribbon week
Can I say I hate red ribbon week? Seems like if we were really serious about the 'drug crisis' we would spend more than a week talking to our kids at school about it, eh?

We went all over the school last week and tied red ribbons to the fence and the trees and everywhere else we could find and now this week they are blowing all over the neighborhood. So we called attention to a societal issue by creating another one and littering the neighborhood.

I like the 50 different languages idea.

63. That is an insane project for an eight year old
Surely they must know that they are just giving the parents an assignment which doesn't teach the kids anything.

Gorgeous kids!!

64. it sounds like your daughter is the top of the class if they gave her the assignment
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 03:05 PM by carlyhippy
He didnt give her much time to get it done..this happened to me and my kids several several times so I ended up helping them and it would only take an hour or so

Get a posterboard, some map colors, go online and find in 50 languages how to say the word NO, write them all over the poster in different directions all around the poster. Help her color and write them out....fin.

on which you write "No" in 50 different fonts, different sizes, etc.

66. I don't understand
why or how your daughter was selected. No criticism of your daughter intended, but I am a middle school teacher. We are doing Red Ribbon this week too, and our poster contest was last week, with voting this week. The contest was strictly voluntary for the kids.

This sounds like an "oops! OH shit I better do something!" decision by the principal.

Are you sure it was assigned, and by the principal? Again, nothing against your daughter, but as a mother and a teacher, I know how kids sometimes screw up instructions/directions. My kids have come home from school saying, "But moooooommmmmm! They said it HAS to be done like this!" and I later find out that such-and-such was optional.

BTW, as a French teacher, I love the idea of NO in different languages. :)

67. Have her do the Motorized Death approach.
Get photos of every car crash, shooting, stabbing, rape and robbery you can find. The gorier the better. Go to tabloids or even violence porn sites to get the photos. Then have all the pictures pasted together and say "This is what drugs cause."

Tell Principal Assface, "You do this in driver training to keep kids from crashing. Why not do it in your noble War on Drugs? Or are you HELPING THE TERRORISTS???"

72. In eighth grade I had to make an anti-drug poster.
I drew a big slug with a joint in its mouth. Underneath it were the words, "Drugs are for Slugs".

People would crack up when they saw it on the wall in History class.

74. That is overkill. But I have an idea:
I bet she won't get graded down for a poster that shows a lot of ideas. School counselors consider activities, such as sports or hobbies, to be a way to "say no to drugs".
Cut out magazine photos of people hiking, riding a bike, baking bread, doing art, in addition to your other ideas. Sounds corny, but I used to work in grade schools, and I'm pretty sure that will do the trick.

78. You said it first, but that is what I was thinking also. Other activities,
sports, music, UIL, etc, are great ways to keep kids learning and grow their self-esteem and usually, stay away from using drugs as a crutch.

I don't think we'll ever be able to stop the idea of experimentation.

80. Speaking as a teacher here
I would encourage you NOT to do your daughter's homework. It's her assignment, not yours.

I think the assignment is a bit on the preachy side. BUT. I also think it's great for kids to have to practice using their imagination, and I think you'd be a better parent if you thought of your role as coaching her to be a creative thinker, rather than just feeding her the answers. If you distance yourself from the brainwashy nature of the question itself, I think it's actually a cool assignment to have to think of 50 ways to say anything.

As a teacher in an art school specifically, one of the big problems I run into is that kids look for the most obvious simplest solution to any assignment. If I ask them to take a photo of "water" a couple will experiment with tears, flushing toilets, ice, etc. But without coaching, 2/3 will take a snapshot of a bottle of water on their desk. It's like they've lost the ability to think.

Please don't be part of that problem.
