When Democrats took over the whole show, minus the White House, did we see them even hinting that they might have a go (within the limits of their powers) at repealing the 'Patriot' Acts, eliminating the TSA and the rest of the Department of Reich Security, resuscitating the EPA, untangling from Iraq, impeaching the blatant criminals in charge or, for that matter, actually doing anything else? What exactly have they done, really, of any consequence? FISA? No, they're too much the same: one nation, under The Corporations.
I rest my case, sadly.
I'm not going to go all Nader here, because there ARE important differences between the two parties (not enough, unfortunately) and it's obvious that if Gore won in 2000 we and the rest of the would have not suffered anything like the past eight years. I'm also not about to channel some sloganeering proletariat hero, because that's just plain obnoxious. There does, however, certainly appear to be a ruling class in this country, and to a great extent it transcends party lines. Too many of those in power have a vested interest in maintaining and consolidating that power, and that of their peers, rather than in doing what they were electorally empowered to do in the first place. It will inevitably start to get better now, certainly, but a good percentage of our nominal 'representatives' are at least as much obstacle as catalyst for and instruments of positive change. And for all the blather about the Land Of The Free and our right to choices, we have less real choice in who governs and how they do it than do the citizens of many other countries.
We do, in this country, however, still have the enviable right to lose everything we ever had or ever will have if we get sick enough. That's a right fought for and hard won by those inspiring patriots in the health insurance and pharmaceutical industries, among others. God-damn-bless America.
