Dale Volker has been in the New York Senate for 34 years. In all that time, the ONLY thing he has done that he can run on is pork-barrel spending. He's got a 0% rating from pro-choice groups, 0% from gay rights groups, 20% from the Humane Society, 0% from anti-gun groups. Apart from all the ratings, he's a thorougly slimy individual. He opposes drug law reform because his district includes Attica Correctional Facility and other big prisons, and he benefits from having the maximum number of prisoners. He inherited his position from his father, and he's kept it by gerrymandering himself a district.
Now despte all this, he is beatable this year. For the first time in his history, he's had two credible challengers in the form of a primary opponent who he narrowly beat, and our own Kathy Konst, a local county legislator. For that reason, he's doing everything he can to fill the air with mudslinging. His behavior is so bad that his fellow Republican primary opponent is now supporting Kathy Konst. Volker's cancelled debates, hired goons to go around to people's houses, made false accusations, even subpoenaed 93 people who did nothing more than sign a petition for ballot access, trying to intimidate them. He's virtually everything that's repugnant about the Republican party.
As part of my local Democratic committee, I've been helping Kathy out as best I can throughout the summer, and I'll tell you this: She's smart, honest, savvy, and a proven reformer. She's for better education, term limits, making the economy work for everybody, and providing good affordable healthcare. She would make all of us out here proud of our representative again, and it would make us even prouder to be part of retaking the New York Senate for the first time since 1964.
But to get there, she needs money. Volker has big business boys on his side, and is carpeting the area with mailers and negative TV ads. Kathy needs money to combat the smear campaign: specifically, she needs a TV ad to counter Volker's negative one. We're doing everything we can out here, but we don't have deep enough pockets. That's why I'm asking my fellow DUers to help me show her a little of the love we rural NY Dems feel for her. Even if it's just five bucks, every little bit counts.
