My income is lumpy (some years I take losses). So I will make a lot of money this year (pre-tax hike!)...and next year when my income is lower I'll get a tax cut.

this year. That's OK.
I'm in a strange place. I started a company 8 years ago and the most I have paid myself is $36,000 a year.
This year I have gotten some big orders and it looks like my profit will be well into six figures....I am kind of shocked. I never had much in the way of savings and we only have $20K in an IRA we set up last year. That, of course has dropped lately.( no other retirement except the value of a shore home that I own with 3 other siblings)
I figure it this way
My taxes are only going to return to the level they would have been before Reagan
There is nothing wrong with giving back...may I even say Patriotic
I was lucky and I know it
1. To be born in the USA
2. To be born into a middle class family...thanks to FDR
3. To have a college educated father......thanks FDR and Truman GI Bill
4. To be raised in a nice neighborhood
5. To have strong family support
6. To be just crazy enough to go to work for myself and crazy enough to say I could build something when I never built anything in my life.
I could go on and on and paying more taxes is not going to change my outlook on life but may help givesomeone else a leg up.
