I don't get all of this yard sign mania
You know if this american population were not so stupid and easily sold on bad ideas such as fear used to bomb Iraq ( the all but forgotten war) and people were not so damn greedy buying everything because it is something new and to be desired, the product that will change your life.

Then perhaps we would not be in this mess right now. A yard sign is not going to change this or a bumper sticker or button when most people don't even know how we got here and why or what the candidates even stand for.

We have had peace signs for decades yet what have they changed and they make a lot more sense than some prized yard sign.

At this point no one has any idea of how to fix this mess. No idea other than some cardboard sign on a post with photo's.

What is this now , the war of the yard signs, who steals who's and who steals the most?

I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the same company makes both Obama and McCain signs , it's all business you know.

8. No offense intended at all here just a question
Personally if I have a bumper sticker saying who I support , who would I expect to impress or even give a damn. They see my car and or me and if I don't strike them just right whether the car or me visually then the sticker is a possible revolting item .

It reminds me of 2003 with all the little made in China american flags peppering the roads having fallen off or the worn and tattered ones haplessly flapping in the wind still hanging on the car window.

All this did was project the american insanity to me let alone the disgrace shown to the flag. No one seemed to care about that aspect.

9. I don't care who gives a damn or is impressed...
I'm in the south...I expect not many are impressed or care about who I support. I don't expect minds to be changed just as my mind is not going to be changed if I look at a bumper sticker or a yard sign supporting McCain/Palin.

We all have our ways of expressing ourselves whether it's music, art, bumper stickers, or whatever. This is just one of them.

4. I fucking hate yard signs
Pardon the nasty language, but that is the level of complete disdain that I have for these ridiculous inventions.

Yard signs do not persuade undecided voters! Go knock doors!

5. Yeah, But If You're One of Those People Knocking
on doors, you save a whole lot of time by knowing who supports Obama/Biden, so you can move on to those homes without signs.

I proudly display my support for my party and my candidates. Plus they get another $5.00 donation for each sign.

P.S. - Keep those Obama signs folks - recycle for the 2012 election.

6. To me, they're comparable to putting out decorations for the holidays.
I know my yard sign and bumper sticker aren't going to change votes. (Although, it would be nice if my neighbors held me in such high regard that they would change their vote based on my endorsement.)

However, I think presidential elections are among the most exciting and important times we get to experience -- ranking right up there with Christmas and Halloween -- if not higher. So just like setting out a Jack O Lantirn or a wreath, I like to put my yard sign out!

10. Mine's up for one important reason
My neighborhood is very homogeneous (read "white"), and pretty much right-leaning. Hopefully, my sign will be just enough to get these folks over their soft racism and realize it's ok to vote for a black man.

Disclaimer: I live in NJ, so the RWers can actually be reasoned with from time to time.

11. Its kind of like posting on freerepublic where I live.
I couldn't stand the thought that I was actually afraid of putting a sticker on my car and a sign in my yard. That is what made me do it. This might not apply to you, but I'm in a southern rural area.

12. Yard signs are fine, but please don't think it means you've done something to get Obama elected.
We need people knocking on doors and making phone calls.

Putting up a yard sign is no more useful than posting shit on DU, knowwhatimean?

13. My yard sign was stolen.
Went and got another. The next time some republican fuck-face comes on my property to steal the sign that I paid for, I will file a police report. Believe it or not, people have been filing them and I will do the same.

14. you assume we're all connected. Not these days. The signs help bind us together
They are a mild form of communication with our neighbors. Solidarity. Don't knock it.

16. No I assume nothing , I know damn well people aren't connected
Edited on Tue Oct-14-08 01:44 PM by blues90
I wasn't knocking it as people doing it , what I was addressing was the war I see here on stolen signs like it's a battle now. I don't recall stolen signs being an issue before unless I missed something.

I don't see any signs or bumper stickers where I live in los angeles. Used to . There was a billboard in 2000 with addicted to war.com on it and protestors every single day.

People assume calif is really so blue but it depends because I run into many who don't come off as blue to me. Many don't know about much and many don't feel global warming is real, all I say is take a look around at all these cars endlessly filling the roads and tell me this has no affect or look at all the bright lite up buildings and stores 24/7 and all the lights where it is impossible to see one single star at night.

People can't see what is right in front of them or even stop to question it to take in the big picture.

I think we live in a mixed up and very surreal world today . Nothing is a given and nothing can be assumed.

15. yard signs are extemely popular in my area
I don't know the effectiveness, I realize that yard signs do not vote.
But i also realize that in my area (ozaukee county-wisconsin) putting up a yard
sign CAN be an act of courage. In this very republican area, it is breaking away from the neighbors. It IS a statement. A yard sign may not mean much in the bluest of blue areas, but don't
underestimate there meaning in enemy territory.

18. Yard signs play a role
No, they're not as important as a strong door-to-door canvassing operation and a strong GOTV operation. But yard signs play a role by showing that a candidate has the support of one's neighbors. They serve to remind on the fence voters that their peers -- people in their neighborhood who they know -- support a particular candidate, which makes it more acceptable for them to support that candidate as well. One of the strongest answers to the bs that mccain and company are spewing about Obama is for my neighbors to see that dozens of the people that live in the same neighborhood - that they socialize with at neighborhood gatherings and whose kids go to school with their kids -- people that have the same long term goals as they do in terms of ensuring a safe and economically secure country -- support Obama

20. A statement of belief, a declaration of intent...
My signs and buttons are nothing more than a statement of belief, a declaration of intent if you will. Although I certainly don't presume that it will have any relevant effect on anyone other than myself, I think the positive affect on myself is quite a good enough reason to have invested in them.

Much the same reason people wear concert t-shirts, or t-shirts with trendy/clever slogans on them, I imagine.

22. So Your Problem With Them Is What Exactly?
Do you just hate everything?

They are harmless and a good way to show support for your candidate. There is nothing wrong with proudly displaying your support as well as marketing your candidate.

This is no time to play pattycake. The future of our nation is at stake.
