Stuck in fundie hell: Idaho, you can run but you can't hide Pic heavy
Edited on Sat Oct-11-08 10:41 PM by MichaelHarris
If you haven't seen the other posts a brief update. I'm in central Idaho fly fishing, you know, that place beyond fundie. Part one here: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4207211

Part two, where it starts getting weird: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x4215728

And finally, Part three, Idaho you can run but you can't hide!

We all know Idaho is famous for potato's and Larry "Wide Stance" Craig but did you know it may also be the fundie capital? Four days in and not one Democratic campaign sign. Well I'm about to blow your mind, meet Packer John:

Yup, that monument says first Democratic Territorial Convention! Idaho had Democrats!!!! Well, in 1863 they did, not sure about now.

Here's a closer look at Packer John's crib:

I doubt Packer John had any lobbyist buddies cuz if he did I'm sure he would have had like a John McCain type cabin. Also, that's notmy beer bottle next to John's house. I think it's an artifact.

There is one thing ole Packer John had and that was scenery, miles and miles of scenery:

Now at some point Republican's took over Idaho. Doesn't sound bad until you see what they used for landfill along the river. See they wanted to save the dirt and rocks so they used cars. Yup, I said cars:

I think the fundie scientist who figured the earth was 5000 years old also figured the trout could use the iron. That's the cabin I'm renting right above the Buick. They are all along the Little Salmon River, buried into the side.

Part 4 tomorrow if I catch a giant trout and don't get kilt.

Michael Harris

On Edit, a nice pdf about Packer John: http://www.idahohistory.net/Reference%20Series/0292.pdf

1. What a shame such a beautiful place is wasted
on such an undeserving populace.

2. It is
without a doubt one of the most beautiful states with some of the poorest people voting for the politicians who will do the least for them.

15. We are not "undeserving"
There are some Dems among the brainwashed here - mainly in Boise. It's the Mormonism that has people's strings for the most part. Believe it or not, most of the population is to the Libertarian side - they vote puke, because they don't see either side serving them on non-cultural issues. Being brainwashed doesn't make you "undeserving" - you hurt my feelings with that. Most folk you meet here are quite nice, caring, if woodsy/mountain-folk types. Besides, we did give you Frank Church of Church Committee Fame :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Church

25. They are turning around. Conversion story inside...

Check out my journal entry from last March. http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Greyskye/9

Short version - my Republican Aunt and Uncle, who have never, ever, voted for a Democrat in their lives, went to see Obama speak in Boise. And they're voting for him.

5. Gorgeous pictures! What a neat cabin; what year is the car?
Did you meet Mr. O'Leary yet?

Packer John's cabin reminds me a little bit of the one Dick Proennecke built in Alaska.

7. my wife
met him today and said he was pretty goofy. The county lets him keep his Yahweh signs up if he keeps that section of the highway clean. To his credit, it's a very clean section. It's sad about that cabin. The county park there named for Packer John is in really bad shape. It looks like the trash hasn't been removed in about 20 years, all the picnic tables have collapsed, and the only person I saw was a "living off the grid" guy. There are a lot of places along that highway, 95 where people have just basically tossed up a shack and just survive.

Mr. O'Leary is also one such guy. I didn't photograph his house but it was pretty bad. There was no water or electricity and most of the back of the house was tarped in. It was like he didn't finish that section and just made a roof and wall with those blue tarps.

10. In about a 100 foot section
I counted 20 cars, some stacked on top of each other. I took more pictures of them cuz it seemed so weird to me. One has a giant tree growing right through it.

18. I normally
shoot with a Nikon D300 but when I'm not doing work stuff I carry this little Ricoh GX100 with me. It didn't sell in the US much but it is without a doubt one of the best digital point and shoots made. They have a new model out called the GX200. The Ricoh can shoot in all manual just like the bigger DSLRs.

I'll post a few more from it here.

22. Idaho is part of my hubby's region
He's on his way back to Colorado tonite! Yay! But, he tells me stories about Idaho. Pullng up to a restaurant and seeing the head of a moose hanging off a truck parked there. A guy with a dead raccoon strapped onto the back of his motorcycle. Strange place.

ID and MT were absolutely gorgeous.

I think MT is changing. Both of their senators are Dems and they have a Dem governor as well, and I believe one of their state legislative bodies is Dem as well.

ID seems like it will take more time. A lot of the people though, should get their heads out of their asses. I'm not holding my breath. But it is one beautiful state.
