AP Exclusive: Docs: BUSHCO Ordered AMERICANS To Be Held In US Military Jails As "Enemy Combatants"
AP Exclusive: Documents say detainee near insanity
Submitted by davidswanson on Wed, 2008-10-08 13:25.

By PAMELA HESS, Associated Press

A U.S. military officer warned Pentagon officials that an American detainee was being driven nearly insane by months of punishing isolation and sensory deprivation in a U.S. military brig, according to documents obtained by The Associated Press.

While the treatment of prisoners at detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and in Afghanistan and Iraq have long been the subject of human rights complaints and court scrutiny, the documents shed new light on how two American citizens and a legal U.S. resident were treated in military jails inside the United States.

The Bush administration ordered the men to be held in military jails as "enemy combatants" for years of interrogations without criminal charges, which would not have been allowed in civilian jails.

The men were interrogated by the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency, repeatedly denied access to attorneys and mail from home and contact with anyone other than guards and their interrogators. They were deprived of natural light for months and for years were forbidden even minor distractions such as a soccer ball or a dictionary.

2. Charge them, or let them go. It's really that simple. Bush and his ilk
have no respect for the Constitution. HE* should be arrested and held for a few years without charges.

26. Nah, the whole of Bushco, Inc. should be locked up
In a cement pit, and given just enough food and water to survive, and live their lives out with nothing more than the clothing on their backs.

22. And we see how many Americans stood up for Jose's rights
yet we still wonder why these people continue to commit criminal acts, it's easy, there is no downside for them.

7. Wow. This is serious
These prisoners were being treated as if they were in Gitmo - but on AMERICAN SOIL.

There's no excuse or exceptions here now - the Bush administration has committed a war crime.

Now there's evidence.

10. This is technically not a war crime
since the us internally is not at war

But it is an impeachable offense and falls under the Torture Act...

Oh wait, that means we need congress to act right?

11. This is
EXACTLY why Obama must pursue these criminals once they are out of office. They have to be held accountable for shredding the Constitution.

15. Here's one of the first - Susan LIndauer

American Kafka: Susan Lindauer Demands "The Trial"

Michael Collins
"Scoop" Independent News

(Wash. DC) Accused "unregistered Iraqi agent", Susan Lindauer, is now challenging the September 15th decision of federal district court Judge Loretta Preska, which continues to find Lindauer to be "incompetent to stand trial." Lindauer’s attorney Brian Shaughnessy filed a Motion for Reconsideration of Preska’s Kafka-like ruling that Lindauer is "incompetent" because of Lindauer's belief and plea that she is "Not Guilty." Lindauer also demands her right to a "Speedy Trial," as guaranteed by the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Nominated for Federal appeals court by President Bush just days before her ruling in this case, Preska's Sept. 15 opinion effectively denied Lindauer her right to a "speedy and public trial," which is required by the Sixth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Judge Preska’s expanded interpretation of "incompetence" to stand trial may now open the gate for competency challenges by defendants throughout the federal court system.

My hunch is most if not all of them will walk away free men.

20. This kind of torture is described in agonizing, heartbreaking detail
in the Shock Doctrine. It destroys the mind.

I can't believe those bastards are doing this to US citizens and still no one in this country cares.

21. Without Impeachment, This Is What "America" Will Always Be
Just another banana republic unable to meet our treaty obligations or apply our own Constitiutional law. Things that MUST be done in real time and not by somebody else, sometime later, to "restore" some principle we simply won't have anymore.

And no, it's not "too late." Nor is it "useless" with conviction/removal.

Even a failed impeachment vote will be a formal objection/accusation -- a necessary tally of who supports Americanism and who denies the principles our greater generations fought and died to forge.

It remains our ONLY moral, patriotic option.

And there will be no second chance or opportunity for later remedy. Things like the always-temporary economic problems and who's going to be the http://www.talkingimpeachment.com/blog/Hall-of-Shame-Inductee----Barak-Obama.html">next torture-abiding occupant of the WH pale in comparison.

Impeachment is our last, fading chance to preserve Our National Soul.

25. Military Dictatorship USA

Military Dictatorship USA`

by Norman D Livergood (former Dept. Head at the US Army War College)

"If Tyranny and Oppression come to this land, it will be in the guise of fighting a foreign enemy."

James Madison, while a United States Congressman

We usually think of a nation being controlled by a military dictatorship when a military leader seizes control through a putsch, as in the case of General Pervez Musharraf in Pakistan or Saddam Hussein in Iraq. The previous government is overthrown and a military strong man places himself in power with few if any constraints from judicial or legislative oversight.

But we must look for the essence of a military dictatorship, those features which are present whenever this form of oppression occurs. In essence, a military dictatorship is a form of government in which absolute power is concentrated in a repressive ruler or a small clique who use military and police power to dominate the people mentally and physically.

Taking this definition as our touchstone, in the United States we know we're living under a military dictatorship when we see:

* a leader retaining power through stealing the election of 2004 and put into power in 2000 by a coup d'etat, not through democratic elections

* the military used to control the civilian population in violation of the U.S. Constitution

* the president ordering a US citizen held indefinitely by the military

* a shadow government being set up consisting entirely of executive branch officials in violation of the Constitution

* government informants spying on fellow citizens
