Ohio court backs McCain on absentee applications

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Supreme Court has ruled in favor of John McCain’s Republican presidential campaign in a dispute over thousands of absentee ballot applications.

The court ruled unanimously today that Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner , a Democrat, must order election boards to accept the applications even if people failed to check a box indicating they are qualified voters.

The applications were distributed by the McCain campaign, and about 3,500 have already been rejected by election boards.

Brunner says the checked box was required to certify the applicant. The court says the voter’s signature provided that certification.
