Republican source: Lesbian rumors ruined Condoleezza Rice's VP chance
Source: PageOneQ

It was Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, not Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, that was the first choice for Senator John McCain's female running mate, according to a mid-level member of the Republican National Committee.

"Once Obama selected Biden" instead of Senator Hillary Clinton (D-NY), the source told journalist Ian Halperin, "they had this theory that Condi was the perfect candidate to put up against him. She's tough, conservative and a hawk, not to mention a football fanatic, which would be more than enough for white men.

<><><><><>

Rice, as Provost of Stanford University long before she was on the Bush cabinet, jointly owned a California house and held a line of credit with documentary filmmaker Randy Bean, with whom Rice has said she bonded over a "mutual love of football."

13. Yeah, it was the foolishness in Georgia which finally cinched it in my mind...
Also, it's abundantly clear Hucklebee's Revenge is a third stringer of the first order.

Picked solely to preserve the fanatical vote. I sometimes wonder if those people realize how they're used.

2. How sad...
"not to mention a football fanatic" which would be more than enough for white men.

That summarizes the qualifications to gain the support of white men for a VP candidate?
Boy am I in trouble, I could care less about sports!

15. "more than enough for white men"
MORE than enough, mind you. Did they really believe this or are white men actually that easily pleased?

5. We have something to be grateful for
Condi or Kay Bailey Hutchison would both have been tough competition. Sarah Palin is a walk in the park compared to these two, IMHO. Their political collateral alone would have made the race a lot tougher.

we still face a very real possibility of a President Palin. That scares the shit out of me!

32. Palin is beatable
if we stick to issues. She can't talk issues. She can only deliver one liners (lies) and repeat them over and over. If we stay away from anything that showcases her personality and press her on issues, I think we will gain. Sadly, the only difference between her and * is lipstick. This means that people will want to have a beer or coffee with her and for some that translates into a vote.

6. Who cares what a "mid-level RNC" loyal Bushie says-the fact is Lieberman was McCain's 1st choice.
Rice was/is part of a criminal conspiracy and a domestic enemy of The United States of America.

24. Yep. Condi would have shattered any efforts by McCain to remove himself from Bush
Sources who don't go on record over something like this are usually full of shit or just trying to stir it up.

7. That would have made the convention running against Bush even more
surreal than it already was. There would be no way to distance themselves from Bush - this also was the NSA person who didn't think that "OBL plans to strike in the US" was something to really act on, calling it just "historical".

The fact the she may have been dropped from consideration over her sexual orientation (real or perceived)is just so wrong.

16. Perhaps, but it's nothing new...
Condi knew perfectly well going in who she was getting in bed with-a bunch of racist, homophobic bigots. If she is a lesbian (not to mention being black) she couldn't possibly have hoped for any more than to be used as a token, unless she's seriously deluded.

And though she did say quite a while ago that she was not interested in running, I still can't help but feel that seeing an adle-brained, inexperienced blusterer like Sarah Palin vault from nowhere to become the darling of the party in less than a week must really have galled her, especially after she's been slogging away for 8 years.

19. I don't pity her in the least
She knew she was getting into bed with these monsters. I just hate that such bigotry still exists.

I agree with your remarks about how she must feel about Palin. Any of the experienced Pukes women must be in shock over such a horrible choice. I would be VERY angry.

It might be the first time in her life that Rice actually says, "Here, hold my earrings."

21. If McGain's "inner circle" argued for Rice, who decided to nix her?
Was this Rove or some other fulminating right-winger? Doesn't say much for the power and opinion of McCain's camp.

Strange how the GOP now fears being hoisted by its own petard.

26. The only up side to her becoming the VP would have been keeping her the
hell away from becoming the commissioner of the NFL.

The "great job" she did for our national security and international reputation is one thing, but wrecking my beloved NFL would have been the final straw! You want to see people in the streets? Try fucking with the country's real national pass-time.
