Barring a poor performance in debate or a sudden disclosure of grossly damaging information, it seems to me that the presidential election outcome is now clear.

John McCain will be the 44th president of the United States.

Governor Palin is yet unreadable. Charles Gibson's first interview with her established that she is teachable, or at least coachable. Gibson tried rather hard to test her. Some of it was ridiculous. "What do you think of the Bush Doctrine?" Come on, Charlie. That's just chicken shit.

6. Sir (almost) Colonel Lang is a pompous ass (going by his "About Me")
For his service in DIA, he was awarded the “Presidential Rank of Distinguished Executive.” This is the equivalent of a British knighthood.

Well la-tee-fucking-da!

19. what an idiot
there is NO award in the US that is equivalent to the rank of British nobility, because it's illegal in the US. Plus, knighthood is the highest honor in the UK for the average citizen. This award this man got isn't even the best award the Pres routinely gives out. Sounds like someone's jealous he didn't get a medal of freedom; he must not know the right people.

8. Completely disagree that debate performances or scandal make a difference here
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 04:29 PM by 0rganism
This "Col. Lang" guy shouldn't bother using them as qualifiers. He should call it like he sees it, for McCain.

Debate performance? That's heavily colored by the media narrative, and rests more in the candidates' abilities to rattle off talking points which may or may not touch on the audience's perception of the issues. If there's one thing GOPers have proven themselves good at over the years, it's rattling off a fixed set of talking points. Not a problem for McCain/Palin.

"Grossly damaging information"? After seeing the tepid response of the public to what would surely be considered grossly damaging information were it affixed to a Democratic candidate, McCain/Palin appear to be immune to scandals of all kinds. I find it increasingly difficult to imagine what could possibly constitute grossly damaging information for this ticket. Even the media appears shocked at how apathetic -- or even hostile -- their typically scandal-fixated audience has become when they point out another outrage from McCain/Palin. When authoritarian followers attach to their dominators, they will excuse almost any crime.

It seems to me that the only way Obama/Biden can win is through energizing our base (which still exists, and is HUGE), strong grass-roots-oriented campaigning, and a sincere attempt to educate voters about Obama's proposed economic policies. We have a chance, but it doesn't rest on the canards "Col. Lang" is looking at. It's all about turnout, overcoming the RNC's vicious caging attempts, and getting an overwhelming unprecedented groundswell of real support from younger voters.

9. "Gibson tried rather hard to test her."
What?

He threw her a softball so she could establish her anti-terror bona fides, and she completely dropped the ball.

12. A lot of citizens will be leaving this country if that crew
enters the White House. Maybe the elite can learn to do real work since they'll have to. You can still get a relatively cheap place to live in Costa Rica as I saw a segment on HGTV about it and it is beautiful!

So Palin's interview was a triumph since it shows she is "...teachable, or at least coachable".

This is the qualification for the second highest office in the country?

What is this guy Lang, the colonel of? Lowered expectations? I'll take Colonel Sanders over this guy.
