Palin interview: God's plan
Charlie Gibson has just finished his first interview with Sarah Palin. It's a global tour -- Iraq and Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan, Georgia and Russia, and America's place in the world. For all of you who were concerned -- Charlie asked plenty of follow-ups. There were also questions about her general qualifications to be Vice President. Or Commander-In-Chief. Here are a couple of excerpts. Much more on World News this evening.

GIBSON: Governor, let me start by asking you a question that I asked John McCain about you, and it is really the central question. Can you look the country in the eye and say "I have the experience and I have the ability to be not just vice president, but perhaps president of the United States of America?"

PALIN: I do, Charlie, and on January 20, when John McCain and I are sworn in, if we are so privileged to be elected to serve this country, we'll be ready. I'm ready.

GIBSON: And you didn't say to yourself, "Am I experienced enough? Am I ready? Do I know enough about international affairs? Do I -- will I feel comfortable enough on the national stage to do this?"

PALIN: I didn't hesitate, no.

GIBSON: Didn't that take some hubris?

PALIN: I -- I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we're on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can't blink. So I didn't blink then even when asked to run as his running mate.

****************************

GIBSON: You said recently, in your old church, "Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God." Are we fighting a holy war?

PALIN: You know, I don't know if that was my exact quote.

GIBSON: Exact words.

PALIN: But the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln's words when he said -- first, he suggested never presume to know what God's will is, and I would never presume to know God's will or to speak God's words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that's a repeat in my comments, was let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God's side. That's what that comment was all about, Charlie.

GIBSON: I take your point about Lincoln's words, but you went on and said, "There is a plan and it is God's plan."

PALIN: I believe that there is a plan for this world and that plan for this world is for good. I believe that there is great hope and great potential for every country to be able to live and be protected with inalienable rights that I believe are God-given, Charlie, and I believe that those are the rights to life and liberty and the pursuit of happiness. That, in my world view, is a grand -- the grand plan.

GIBSON: But then are you sending your son on a task that is from God?

PALIN: I don't know if the task is from God, Charlie. What I know is that my son has made a decision. I am so proud of his independent and strong decision he has made, what he decided to do and serving for the right reasons and serving something greater than himself and not choosing a real easy path where he could be more comfortable and certainly safer.

1. Based on how many times she says "Charlie" in the transcript ...
She sounds nervous. You don't repeat the interviewer's name
in quite such rapid succession unless you're looking for more
time to formulate an answer. And trying to get overly "folksy"
with him probably makes her look like she's pandering. Can't
wait to see how this all plays tonight.

4. Spot on...
I'll be anxiously awaiting SEEING this interview. Body language, blinking, touching the face, crossed arms, leaning into the interviewer - or away, looking "out into space" as if searching out answers, etc.... lost of "tells" to look for.

7. She answers questions
like a beauty contestant. It's all fugging PR bullshit. She is a vacuous vindictive viper.

9. Yes, but what was intended and how it comes off can be different
I think viewers may be able to see through her attempts
to ingratiate herself, or to turn a serious interview
(in which Russia and the Cold War are topics) into a
more "folksy" encounter. People want their president
to be SERIOUS when the subject matter requires it,
and to be more casual when discussing, oh, maybe her
family or the kind of car she drives. Trying to
"folksy" it up at inappropriate times can look REALLY
awkward and not inspire confidence.

14. Or overly prepped. It's similar to McCain's "friends," and...
worthy of a new drinking game. :)

3. So
He didn't ask her any specific questions about world leaders or what is happening in the middle east? I doubt she could even name certain world leaders or even know whats going on in Pakistan at the moment. Just lame questions like, Are you ready to lead???

8. When Charlie asks "Didn't that take some hubris?", you can tell
by her answer that Palin does not know the meaning of the word. Which is perfectly expected for a Republican!

Also love the part about her son's strong, independent decision to go into the military. Wasn't today the day he was leaving for Iraq? Anyway, as we know from the Enquirer's hard-hitting journalism, it was probably either the military or the slammer.

And have we just gone through the fuckin' rabbit hole, or what? I can't believe I just typed "Enquirer" and "journalism" in the same sentence.

10. What does she believe re the Temple Mount in Jerusalem ?
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 05:33 PM by EVDebs
Does she think it's her Christian duty to make sure those mosques on the Temple Mount are removed to fulfill the prophesies on the End Times ? Like Rev Haggee and the other Christian Zionists who have control of the DoD ?

13. Lincoln also said
We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts,
not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution.

15. The one part in there which, IMO, may give "average" viewers pause...
is the "no hesitation" comment.

Forget her being a mother, with young children, anyone who has a THOUGHT PROCESS would think about their ability to lead a country, for cryin' out loud.

The arrogance of that one statement is astounding.

19. Gibson's still pitching softballs.
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 06:03 PM by Captiosus
Softball questions, but what's telling is she's faring poorly even on those.

She can't hit the softballs out of the park.
She finally gets around to hitting the softballs, but they're weak grounders to shortstop.

The MSM will love it and spin it as being the greatest interview ever.

21. Should have asked: What [the fuck] does 'victory' mean to you?
Everything that comes out that woman's piehole is so nebulously ideological, does she even know what she means? She's like the worst kind of media creation, spewing sinister ideological psychobabble without a clue as to how the national and global infrastructure works.

God, that she's even a contender is such a fucking depressing referendum on our culture.

23. Deer in headlights moment
I thought her worst moment was when Gibson asked about the Bush Doctrine. Any political blogger worth his or her mouse pad knows this refers to Bush's ideas on preemptive war. She obviously didn't have a clue.
