Obama Camp Sends Out Embarrassing Palin Pic
By Tommy Christopher
Sep 8th 2008 12:40PM
Filed Under:eRepublicans, John McCain, 2008 President, Sarah Palin

The Obama campaign sent out a memo today, along with the accompanying picture, to challenge Palin's claim that she opposed Ted Stevens' "Bridge to Nowhere" earmark. (via email)
I Supported the Bridge to Nowhere and All I Got Was This Lousy T-Shirt

Given that the McCain campaign again claimed that Governor Palin opposed the "Bridge to Nowhere" in their new ad today despite the fact that the claim has been repeatedly debunked, we thought you'd be interested in seeing the following photograph from Governor Palin's 2006 campaign in which she's proudly posing with a t-shirt that reads "NOWHERE ALASKA 99901":
I don't know what the big deal is. I used to watch "Trading Spaces," and they would call this "good use of negative space."

The memo's headline is a nice touch, but in case that was all too subtle, they threw in a quote from WaPo's Howard Kurtz for good measure:
"he whopper here is that Palin opposed her state's notorious Bridge to Nowhere. She endorsed the remote project while running for governor in 2006, claimed to be an opponent only after Congress killed its funding the next year and has used the $223 million provided for it for other state ventures. Far from being an opponent of earmarks, Palin hired lobbyists to try to capture more federal funding."
I think Palin meant to say she's an opponent of "remakes." I agree, especially those "reimaginings" like Mission: Impossible. Jim Phelps would never have done that.

Or it could be that Palin is the perfect symbol for McCain's Republican Party. In a country whose people overwhelmingly think it is going in the wrong direction, McCain and Palin want to keep going, right off of that bridge to nowhere.

I just didn't want this to be a sarcastic post, or even worse, a fake picture floated out there, picked up by the Obama camp, then "exposed" to be a fake, making them and us look like idiots for using it as evidence. I think something like that happened before.

Just wanted to be sure!

11. Interesting 99901 statistic
I was pretty sure that the 99901 referred to the local zip code, but I Googled it just to be sure. What caught my eye was the 2nd sub-link:
Registered sex offenders in zip code 99901
According to our research of the Alaska and other state lists there were 59 registered sex offenders living in zip code 99901 (Ketchikan, AK)

59? That seemed awfully high, so I compared it to my local zip code, which actually has a higher population then does 99901. The result? 10. 10 Registered Sex Offenders compared to 59. Holy Crap! Guess it makes sense that folks with that kind of a record attached to them are going to head for the frontier.

According to our research there were 63 registered sex offenders living in Wasilla, Alaska in early 2007.
The ratio of number of residents in Wasilla to the number of sex offenders is 133 to 1.

23. No, but Alaska might be the sex offender state

http://www.city-data.com/so/Alaska.html

I've only skimmed through the "C's" so far, but the number of towns with less than a 100:1 ratio are truly eye opening! It would actually be a lot easier to count the cities/towns that have a greater than 1000:1 ratio - there sure haven't been many of those so far...

52. That list is very much distorted by the size of those towns
I find it hard to worry about a town with a 66:1 sex offender ratio when the population is 67. I went through some of that list too, and while some of the numbers really are eye-popping (828 registered offenders in Anchorage! Better: 135 in Wasilla!) check out Chuathbaluk--sex offender ratio 121:1 with one sex offender. Or look at Beaver: 84:1 ratio, and the one offender is a woman who attempted to have sex with a 15-year-old when she was 18.

It's not that all the sex offenders flocked to Alaska; it's that the numbers are distorted by all the half-horse towns there.

42. Only WI and MI have a higher per-capita rate of sex offenders.
http://www.familywatchdog.us/OffenderCountByState.asp

However, please remember that you can become a registered sex offender by getting caught urinating in public - especially if you're poor. I would like to see hard numbers with those offenses, as well as those for consensual public sex eliminated from the totals.

37. The New Republicans feel that lying is OK if it furthers their goals.
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 11:17 PM by The Woodpecker
At this point a majority of New Republicans know darn well that Palin was for taking federal money for the bridge. New Republicans would expect their politicians to take hundreds of millions when offered.

The whole strategy of the New Republicans is trying to pretend en-mass that she is actually an "Original Maverick". The pod people who make up the New Republicans laugh at the trickery going on and whisper amongst themselves that all is fair in love and politics as long as we win and they lose.

If falsely labeling their pathetic candidates "Original Mavericks" will get them some indy votes then it's a great strategy to use they feel. The truth really never mattered in the larger scope of things to them. Staying in power to propagate the evils they intend to deliver to the 'non-believers' of the world is and always has been the New Republicans goal.

I think Obama needs to be careful not to fall into the trap (which is one of the reasons why I think McCain chose her, a brilliant move I might add) of focusing on Palin too much. This is what they want. He needs to continue to "dog" McCain and leave her out of it as much as possible, so it doesn't look like the big man is picking on the little woman.
