It's the gang behind her -- McCain didn't think of her all by himself and she didn't just rise in on her snowmobile.

Palin was inserted into the process by the scariest group imaginable, the Council for National Policy -- LeHaye, Dobson, Norquist, Oliver North, among others -- which has been salivating over the idea of getting another Margaret Thatcher into the White Hous. If McCain Palin manage to steal the election, I doubt if McCain would survive very long. These are people who would have no qualms about finding some "lone, crazed gunman" to bring their goal about.

These days vice presidents ride the coattails of the presidential candidate into office, but there will be more than a few xtian nuts voting for McCain/Palin specifically to get the junior member of the ticket within reach of the oval office-- a position no fundy could ever realistically dream of achieving at the head of the ticket.

Ask yourself - a week ago, McCain was essentially done. People thought he was going to pick Pawlenty, because he couldn't pick Romney, Ridge or Lieberman. Some reports are that he offered the job to Lieberman, and then was forced by Dobson et al to retract it. McCain was told - pick Palin or we won't financially support you or work to get out the vote. MCain sold his soul (again) and made the call to Lieberman and to Palin.

I know McCain sold his soul because he hired the guy that trashed him in 2000. You have to make some serious rationalizations = soul selling-- to do that. There is forgiveness, and then there is getting into bed with the guy that trashed you.

Why would McCain do this - because he wants to WIN. Wants, needs, craves, desires, will do anything to win. He has rationalized that if he wins, he can then do what he really wants to do - he can go back to being a Maverick. We saw glimpses in his speech the other night, but no specifics. McCain couldn't say the words immigration, campaign finance or earmarks or pork or anything specific because that would tick off Republicans. He could only make vague references. But he is telling himself once I am President I will make up for this and do what I want - reach across the aisle and all that.

But consider why the Republican base is supposedly so excited now, when they were not a week ago. They are not excited about McCain - they are excited about Palin. Palin is one of them, pliable and reckless like Bush and conservative like Bush - perhaps more so. Usually, and except in limited circumstances, like Cheney was to Bush, the VP does not run the show - the VP does not make and adopt policy in Washington. So, if the base is excited about Palin - how will the base be happy if Palin is number 2 and not running the show.

So I come back to your premise - the base wants Palin to run the show - how can that happen? Ask yourself.
