Are People Being Allowed To Evacuate Their Pets If They Are Using
the public buses or planes?

i saw a piece on cnn and it showed the reporter standing by a bird cage, he said people were not allowed to bring their pets with them and a woman who had these birds did not know this. she brought them to the post office where they were screening people to get on planes. the lady was told she had to leave the birds there!

are we gonna need an animal rescue for nola?

2. I Saw That

Don't blame me for watching Clownservative News Network and the ridiculous Rick Sanchez - - I was at the gym.

They showed the birds sitting there in a cage, and the on-scene reporter said that the airport officials would try to get them to her in Atlanta, where she was apparently going. Very sad. But since ClownNN publicized it, maybe they will indeed make it to her.

Incidentally, Sanchez's response was "so much for the birds." Charming, Rick! What a douche.

Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 03:01 AM by rebel with a cause
getting ready for bed, when I came back to the tv, the news of NO was on, so I stopped to seee what was up. When I saw that I emailed them and asked them about it, but they didn't say anything about it. Too busy talking about mccain and palin going to Mississippi tomorrow and maybe to New Orleans. :puke:

Now Obama Revealed is going to be on again. No more news.

Forgot to add the link to this article about some people not leaving. Oh and mccain revealed is on instead, Barack's will be following.

3. I don't know what the regulations on the mandatory rescue are,
but I did hear local newspeople saying during the voluntary rescue, "Be sure to take your pets with you!"

5. About pet evacuation....
1. Pets are being evacuated with their owners. Shelters have been set up that allow owners and pets to be together (not housed in the same physical area, but close enough for the owners to visit their pets daily).

2. Pets are being transported to these shelters in the instances where the owners do not have transportation themselves. The people are taking buses and the animals are being crated and transported separately. Owners and pets are being given matching bracelets to ensure they are reunited.

3. Because pets are being accommodated at shelters, National guardsmen and women are evacuating pets along with their owners.

4. Rescue groups are already in the area, transporting shelter animals to safety. Once this is completed, they will be returning to NOLA to act as first-responders for animals. Pasado Safe Haven and Best Friends Network are absolutely already there, I know that ASPCA is at least mobilizing and I'm sure HSUS is there too.

5. Regarding the woman with the birds, I've heard that a rescue is working to sort this out and get those birds.

I was pretty into the online rescue stuff for Katrina, so I've been reading a lot about this all day. It sounds like there's a good plan in place, here's hoping that it gets implemented properly.

Was trying to watch the mccain bio on CNN to see if it had the negative things about him like the one about Obama did. Don't know if I will be able to take it or not. :puke:

21. Yay

That's awesome, Kristi, thanks. I am a total softie for pets. I'm glad that this apparently will not be an issue this time around, and I was hoping that a shelter or a rescue might step up for that lady and her birdies since they were on TV. Thanks. :-)

6. i found this article....
I hope they learned their lesson from those who stayed behind because of their pets in Katrina....

http://woundedtimes.blogspot.com/2008/08/new-orleans-evacuating-people-and-pets.html

"I'm not sure where I'm going," Margie Hawkins of New Orleans told CNN as she stood outside Union Passenger Terminal, where people were waiting to be transported out of New Orleans.

However, she was not fazed.

"I am confident and positive that the city will arrange a good place," she said, her small dog Bubbles yipping at her feet. Unlike the runup to Katrina, officials are allowing people to take their pets with them.

9. found this on the city of new orleans website:
Protecting your pets
It's important to include your pet in your plan of action. You will need to know what to do with your pet since they're not allowed in evacuation shelters or most hotels.

You basically have three choices: take them with you, leave them home, or find a place for them to stay.

Taking them with you, checklist
• ID collar
• Current rabies tags
• Pet carrier
• Leash
• Food & water bowls
• Food & water
• Medicines, presription or over-the-counter
• Toy
• Cat box, litter & pooper-scooper

Leaving your pet at home
• Confine your pet to a safe, high-area inside your home, away from windows and outside walls.
• Leave water in a sturdy no spill container
• Give them a three-day supply of dry food
• Post a notice outside your home listing what animals are inside and where they are located
• Never leave pets together during a disaster
• Never leave pets chained or loose outside

Places pets can stay
• At a friend's or family member's home in a safe inland area
• With you at the hotel, if the establishment allows pets
• A kennel with boarding capabilities outside the risk area
• Bring them indoors with your family if you decide not to evacuate

8. All I know about is the buses...
Edited on Sun Aug-31-08 01:58 AM by Suich
people are encouraged to bring their pets in carriers. If the carrier is big and can't fit on the bus with you, there are trailers that will carry them. I don't know anything about the lady with the birds. After Katrina, they figured out it was better to have people bring their pets with them when they evacuate.

12. okay--i just found this on the city's website:
CITIZENS EVACUATE
City plan starts
The City of New Orleans launched the City Assisted Evacuation Plan this morning at 8 a.m. in preparation for Hurricane Gustav. Officials and volunteers helped check in citizens who needed assistance evacuating the city, including those with medical needs and with pets. The citizens using this program will leave the city on buses and trains to various locations in the Southeast.

19. They are allowing for pet evacuation.
My partner and I are getting ready to leave NOLA in an hour or so. We are taking our dog, cat, and 25 birds. The big thing is finding a hotel along the way that will allow for all of us to stay. We are transporting the birds in small boxes with seed and oranges (water source), except Willow (parrot) and Ceasar and Czarina (lovebirds). They will have special cages. The sad thing is we have strays who live around our house, so I am worried about them as well. We are leaving them a bag of food.

Keep a special thought for those of us traveling with our furry, feathery, and finny friends.

20. Thank goodness they thought of the pets this time.
To many people, they're a family member, not a piece of furniture to be left behind.
