FILL UP ON GAS TONIGHT!
Don't fill up when the people on TV tell you to, it will be too late then.

I highly suggest to DU that you do it before the prices go up well over $4 a gallon again very very soon.

2. Based on what?
Edited on Sat Aug-30-08 04:51 PM by goodcitizen
That its Labor Day weekend and gas always goes up? Or that the hurricane may take a few rigs off line? I think most people understand these things affect prices but I don't see any huge surge coming.

19. I'm in Lake Co. and we got ours for $3.56 but only paid $2.30
We buy all of our baby formula and gift cards from Giant Eagle. They recently ran a double offer so last weeks fill up was $1.80 off. It works out pretty good for us.

hurricane is taking dead aim on a large portion of this country's refinery operations, all of which are now shut down. Also, it's a holiday weekend that takes a lot of fuel. Also, there are reports that New Orleans and southern LA are already running low on fuel.

Welcome to DU.

Explain that to us, genius.

5. Russia was threatening to cut off supplies as early as Monday.
I filled up yesterday.

Today they say they will NOT cut supplies. But people are getting nervous anyway.

11. Me, too. And I note that none of my friends and neighbors
scoffed at me this time. When Katrina was headed toward the Gulf I filled up and advised them to do the same. They scoffed at me. They're all filling up this time. Prices are bad enough but we had shortages here in western NC and could again due to refineries shutting down.

8. Got up early and topped off my tank first thing this morning.
Of course, I will burn through it getting into town to work on the Obama campaign, but that is worth it.

10. The markets are closed right now.
Also, according to stories on Bloomberg>Markets>Energy, the expected hits to the markets shouold be minimal, due to the fact that domestic supplies are so sufficient that the storm should not have a significant short-term effect.

This is from people in the industry.

There has not been any sustainable upward movement from this storm. They tried, but it did not take.

12. It's not just the prices.....
Can't speak for elsewhere in the country, but we had gas shortages in Western NC after Katrina. It was the refineries shutting down, among other issues....it was my understanding that the refineries were the primary problem. Some gas stations shut down and there were lines at others, along with rationing. It was relatively brief but it was enough to impact people.

13. IIRC
Rita disabled major artery (pumping station) of oil from Gulf to rest of USA for a while - and there were 4$/gallon prices because of that in 2005.

In other news, Gulf production has not yet reached pre Katrina&Rita levels and probably never fill.

17. It hasn't, because...
No government agency with oversight responsibility has looked into the situation. We all know why that is.

Same thing with the refineries and their manipulation of output and supplies of distillates to the US, while shipping 1.6 million barrenls of refinery products a day, overseas.

The last eight years have been quite an orgy for the Oil Field Trash.

23. Umm
The "Big Oil Conspiracy" is strong narrative with lot's of background (eg. ban on hemp is closely related to big oil interests) but as is usual with "conspiracies", the reality tends to be more complex or "stupid" or even plain.
