Pakistani lawmaker defends honor killings

Tribesmen bury five women alive for wanting to choose their own husbands

"ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - A Pakistani lawmaker defended a decision by southwestern tribesmen to bury five women alive because they wanted to choose their own husbands, telling stunned members of Parliament this week to spare him their outrage.

"These are centuries-old traditions and I will continue to defend them," Israr Ullah Zehri, who represents Baluchistan province, said Saturday. "Only those who indulge in immoral acts should be afraid."

The women, three of whom were teenagers, were first shot and then thrown into a ditch.

They were still breathing as their bodies were covered with rocks and mud, according media reports and human rights activists, who said their only "crime" was that they wished to marry men of their own choosing.

Zehri told a packed and flabbergasted Parliament on Friday that Baluch tribal traditions helped stop obscenity and then asked fellow lawmakers not to make a big fuss about it..."

1. No such thing as honor killings.
It's woman-hating murder.

They call them "honor killings." Since when is murder honorable? These men bring shame upon not only themselves and their families with this barbarity, but on Islam. As long as Islam is used as an excuse for this kind of horror, it will be seen by many as a barbaric religion. I have to admit, I see it that way.
I'm not like the crazy right-wingers who think all Muslims are terrorists and deserve to be tortured and killed. Quite the contrary. Those abuses of Muslims horrify me. Everyone on this planet, regardless of their religion or race, deserves to be treated humanely. But I hate Islam for what it does to women in much the same way that I hate the Bush administration's torture and killing of Muslims: I believe in the sanctity and dignity of each human life, Muslim or Christian, male or female. I may hate the murderous misogyny of Islam, but I still love Muslims as fellow human beings. Hate the institution, love the people.

I hope that makes sense.

edited for grammar

7. .....

The women in that part of the world need to be armed and well-trained in martial arts. Maybe that would change things.

Because nothing says "manly" more than controlling women's sexuality.
