Ban on gay adoption cleared for Arkansas ballot
from ThinkProgress:

Ban on gay adoption cleared for Arkansas ballot.»

A ballot initiative “aimed at effectively banning gays and lesbians from becoming foster or adoptive parents” was cleared to appear on this fall’s ballot in Arkansas. The measure “would prohibit unmarried couples living together from fostering or adopting children.” Sen. John McCain has caved to the right wing on this issue, recently stating that he doesn’t “believe in gay adoption.” “I am for the values that two parent families, the traditional family represents,” McCain said recently, presumably indicating his support for the Arkansas initiative.

2. It's disgusting that they were able to get 85,000 signatures for this.
All those kids that will be stuck in a foster care system for the rest of their lives!

3. The easiest way to hurt Arkansas? Boycott Wal-Mart.
Of course, I'd imagine that quite a few of us already refrain from shopping at Wal-Mart, but still. Convince friends and family members to stay away from Wal-Mart (and tell them exactly WHY) and watch how fast this bill goes away. Wal-Mart has more power and influence in Arkansas than pretty much any other single company, and comprises a decent chunk of the Arkansas economy. Start scaring Wally-World with a boycott, and they might drop a hint or two to Arkansas that maybe their headquarters should be relocated to a less "controversial" place. Presto--bill gone.

4. I stand up in opposition.
Every time I see an attack on gay parent adoption, I see an attack on my family.

We are not a two-parent family. There is not a male parent in my daughters life. An attack on gay parent adoption is an attack on my family as well as gay parent families. I will not stand by quietly.

My daughter spent more than 4 years in foster care. Her birth family was a two-parent heterosexual family. But I am her mom. I have sat with her when she sobbed at night because she was afraid. I have taken her to her counseling appointments as she tries to deal with what happened to her before we were a family. I have cried with her. I have laughed with her. I have yelled at her. I have dropped her off for college. I talk to her at least 3 times a day, working to convince her that she can do this, that she is strong, that she is amazing. I have loved her. I am her mom. Her life is better because we are a family. My life is better because we are a family.

I know I will never convince people like McCain that our adoption was right. He would say it is wrong. But as my wise daughter once told me when someone said something bad about me, "Just because he says that, doesn't make it true."

He is wrong.

5. How to be a hero
:toast: :toast: :yourock:
Kids need love, safety, support, and love. If anything, "Arkie" kids need some extra. From my (limited) experience with Arkies, kids there would be far better off with "unconventional" families.

6. Someone should ask McCain if he's planning to adopt
A lot of kids need parents, and if he supports taking a subset of prospective parents off the table, he should be willing to step up in their place.
