PROVIDENCE ––

People like Kim Ahern may hold the 2008 election in their hands. She’s 24, a Providence College graduate,
a law student at Roger Williams University, and a veteran user of Internet social networking sites.

That puts her in the demographic group of college-educated, tech-savvy 18-to-24-year-olds that “turned out in substantial numbers” in the 2004 presidential election, and “is likely to turn out this time,” says Curtis Gans, director of the Center for the Study of the American Electorate, at American University, in Washington, D.C.

Four years ago, Ahern’s demographic group was motivated to vote by opposition to President Bush, and became the demographic subgroup to show the greatest gain in turnout, says Gans. Their motivation this year is more affirmative, he says.

“This group is largely taken with the Obama candidacy and is devoting considerable energy to his campaign,” he says.

Ahern is heading to Denver for the Democratic National Convention, as a Rhode Island delegate for Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., who will become the first African-American to be nominated for president by a major political party.

And just wait until they all return to college this week and next!

They're motivated this year to vote!! :woohoo:

1. I'm betting that this group in particular
is also getting under-polled, which makes the "dead-heat" the media wants us to believe exists, not so close after all.

2. It is illegal to poll cellphone users, so you know they're being ignored.
The pollsters would have to pay big money to contact them and they don't!

30% of the electorate have cellphones ONLY!! When the pollsters call landlines

they get conservative, married, homeowners... not the youth, or African Americans

or Hispanics. There was a poll done by Zogby, Pew and The Washington Post that showed

that the poll numbers would be quite different if cell phone users were polled.

I can't find the link but I posted the article a few weeks ago.

4. I don't ever answer the land phone....
We just have it because it's been my phone number since 1970. But I have a cell and the mrs has a cell. There are a whole lot of peeps who are not even in the mix.

Bill Schnieder said this morning that they are allowing for that.

I don't see how.

7. The AP called me for a political poll on my landline during the primaries
but I use dial up and so it was a fluke they even got through to me! :P

No one can ever get through to me via my phone. I tell family & friends to e-mail me instead!

But that poll took quite awhile to answer all their questions too, like 30 minutes!

3. Cell Phones and the 2008 Vote: An Update - (61% of cellphone users lean to Obama!)

Cell Phones and the 2008 Vote: An Update

http://pewresearch.org/pubs/901/cell-phones-polling-election-2008

by Scott Keeter, Director of Survey Research, Pew Research Center

July 17, 2008

Pollsters are continuing to monitor changes in telephone use by the U.S. public, since most surveys are still conducted using only landline telephones. Growing numbers of Americans are reachable only by cell phone, and an even larger number who have both a landline and a cell phone may be "functionally cell-only" because of their phone use habits. The latest Pew Research Center national survey, conducted June 18-29 with a sample of 2,004 adults including 503 on a cell phone, finds that the overall estimate of voter presidential preference is modestly affected by whether or not the cell phone respondents are included. Barack Obama holds a 48% to 40% lead in the sample that includes cell phones, and a 46% to 41% advantage in the landline sample. Estimates of congressional vote are the same in the landline and combined samples.

6. Actually received a call
I was so surprised when I received a call from a pollster, but he was even more surprised I believe. When asked who I planned on voting for I replied why Obama of course! He actually said 'What?'. I don't know where they get their information prior to making these calls, but the feeling I got from it was that he expected an entirely different response. Wonder if this is the way they take all polls, or if this is just an isolated experience. Anyone else have this happen? Oh by the way, I am one of those 'older' voters, guess they thought us older folks don't have the ability to check things out. Let me tell you, they are sadly mistaken as we are quite active and very curious and we do lots of investigating thanks to online information, we love it! and I have a cellphone w/internet access and I also make good use of that as well!

9. Welcome to DU, aNHite !! Did they call on your landline?
Maybe the guy at the other end didn't hear your response?

As I stated above, I was polled by the AP a couple of months back
and they asked me a ton of questions and had multiple choice answers
that they read back constantly... I think that's why it took so long.

You are among company.... the largest demographic here on DU are boomers! ;)

:hi:

10. Thanks for the welcome!
Hey...thanks for the welcome. I was reached on my landline and the way he asked 'What?' was as if he could not believe my response. He could have not heard me, I tend to think he just didn't like what he heard!;) This wasn't a lenghty poll, just about 10 minutes.

I enjoy visiting this site, am so happy I was referred to it by a friend. Hey us boomers aren't so bad after all are we? I often where a shirt that says: I Think, therefore I am a Liberal! Boy, do I get looks from that one, and lots of 'I like your shirt' responses. Time to make some noise, always respectfully of course.

Hope you are having a truly wonderful day.
