1. In the mean time go with Kong Stuff-A-Ball

I don't know what I'd do without it, and yes it has a vent hole on the other end.

4. Actually....don't.
I refuse to give anything to my dog that isn't natural after he had to have surgery to remove a blockage.

He managed to chew through several kong toys. The last one ended up giving him a blockage in his intestine. During surgery, the vets removed a silver dollar sized piece, which still had the "KO" on it for good measure.

5. Well, yes. Obviously avoid Kongs if your dog is a chewer.
My dog just rolls it around the house for hours.

6. you probably had a Kong that was too small for the dog....
they have small, regular, king, and ultra king, or something like that.

We have big dogs, and they love their kong toys. But we don't give them the little ones, just the larger size.

chewing. It lasts about 4-6 months before showing any sign of wear. I buy four at a time so I always have a new one to give him at the first sign of wear.
I put his favorite treat, baby carrots, inside it and he can spend 20 minutes getting them out. Whenever he wants a treat, he brings me his ball.

I would heartily recommend the Stuff-A-Ball - formerly the HAV-A-BALL, before Kong bought the company - to anyone who has a dog that loves to chew. I give him the Xtra large, but it comes in sizes for all.

I buy them at Amazon.com. So far they have had the best prices I could find.

Amazon.com Review
The best of all possible worlds: the Kong Stuff-a-Ball is a treat dispenser, a wild-bouncing rubber "ball," and a dental cleaning device all in one. Made from the same super-durable, puncture-resistant, non-toxic rubber as classic Kong toys, it's designed to hold treats that dispense as a dog rolls the ball, chews, and plays. Wedge biscuits into the center ports and smear peanut butter or Kong brand Stuff 'N Pastes in the crevices, and extracting the contents becomes a "hunt" to keep any pooch happy and busy for hours while their owner's away. For the pooch with separation anxiety or problem behaviors, chewing on a Stuff-a-Ball provides boredom prevention, stress relief, and intellectual stimulation while she's home alone. Not to mention the dental benefits: Stuff-a-Ball's ridged exterior grooves gently "squeegee" teeth and gums clean, helping prevent plaque and tartar buildup (not to mention canine halitosis). Try smearing doggy toothpaste (or Kong Stuff 'N Breath Treat) into the exterior grooves to motivate your dog to chew and freshen their breath at the same time. Best of all, the irregularly shaped design produces a goofy, unpredictable bounce that will keep your dog's attention far longer than a conventional round ball. Measuring 4-1/4 inches in diameter, this Stuff-a-Ball is recommended for the largest breeds, including malamutes, Labs, and Rhodesian Ridgebacks. Regularly inspect your ball for cracks or missing chunks, and replace worn or damaged toys to avoid a choking hazard. Satisfaction is guaranteed; if either you or your dog aren't happy with your purchase, return within 30 days for a full refund.

2. Poor pooch!
I thought the swollen tongue was a cute temporary aftereffect until I realized they had to amputate. I stopped my grinning pretty quick.

Poor Chai.

3. One puzzling aspect of that story
Additionally, I shared my story with friends who have a French Bulldog named Petunia. Upon hearing my story their eyes widened. They explained that the same thing happened twice in one night with a smaller version of the same ball to their dog. Fortunately, they were able to pull it off before the tongue swelled, but not without tremendous effort and pain to the dog. They recalled how horrific it was to hear their dog screaming while they had to pry the ball from her tongue.

How did that happen twice? After it happened the first time, wouldn't you dispose of the toy (somewhere the dog couldn't retrieve it)?

8. Maybe it pulled off easily the first time...? But you'd think they would notice
a hole chewed in it. Maybe they didn't realize what actually happened...thought the doggie just wanted to hang onto it? I agree that is odd.

Luckily they were nearby.

11. My dogs ball looks like that.
No idea who makes it though...it's just something I grabbed in PetCo one day. I'll have to check it tonight to make sure it has at least two vent holes in it.

Thanks for the heads up.
