olympics - they only seem to do track, swim, beach volleyball, gymnastics, there
are so many other sports yet they repeat some of these over and over and beach volleyball seems to be the most shown other than phelps and gymnastics - go figure

30. They showed fencing.
And the women's fencing team actually had a sit down with Bob Costas, so it's not like they ignored it.

7. There are 4 other channels on cable showing the other sports
Edited on Wed Aug-20-08 08:22 PM by Mike Daniels
NBC proper is the major revenue source and it's natural that they are going to show the sports that will draw the biggest number of views.

In the 70's when cable was either non-existent or extremely small in scope it was logical for ABC to give some time to the smaller events although even then they usually showed those in the afternoon.

21. Did you watch the gold medal round tonight?
Played in a pouring rain on beach sand. Yeah that was soft porn. The ladies on both sides made some incredible plays in horrid conditions. I think that if you find that sexually stimulating then it's you that have a problem.

22. And Oxygen, in addition to NBC, MSNBC, CNBC and USA.
But not cable here...DirecTV. We can also get east and west feeds of NBC.

Soccer, wrestling, BMX, crew, etc., etc.

For those apparently not aware that China is halfway around the globe...more or less...we do have differences in time zones. Twelve to fifteens hours difference in the contiguous forty eight...more in parts of Alaska and definitely Hawai'i.

Synchronized swimming? Come on, it's like cheerleading in the pool. Blech (sorry if you're into either cheerleading or synchronized swimming, it's just ain't my thing). But I've seen boxing, kayaking, water polo, diving...you name it.

MSNBC or CNBC had weight lifting. Sucks if you don't have cable, I guess. I know that our DVR has been getting a workout these past days (actually we have two DVRs so we can record all 4 channels if they broadcast at the same time).

26. You can still see weightlifting.
Right here:

http://www.nbcolympics.com/weightlifting/video/all/index.html

They have all the coverage archived. It was pretty good. There was that one guy with the horrific injury (his elbow imploded), which was scary. But I looked at both the men's and women's lifts and it was good. The women all set world records, so that was wild.

Note: You have to enter your zipcode and cable provider (it doesn't actually have to be YOURS, just whatever works) and then select the video you want to see. For any other sports, including wrestling, you can just select the sport from the left-hand column and look for 'videos'. Personally, I don't have any interest in wrestling.

27. The coverage this olympics has the been the widest of any so far.
Now, if you only have over the air free tv, then maybe not. But if you have cable or satellite, and a digital receiver (I don't), in addition to internet, there's more coverage than you can possibly watch. On the various channels they've shown everything from badminton, to equestrian, to wrestling, to team handball.

I don't remember beach volleyball getting much coverage before this olympics, but the other sports have always been the big coverage sports.

On a complete non sequitur, water polo has to be the stupidest thing I've seen this entire olympics. And that includes race-walking and trampoline.

32. Join the internet
revolution baby...

www.nbcolympics.com

today's non-mainstream sporting events being covered right now:
Modern Pentathlon
Taekwondo
Table Tennis
Equestrian
Handball

later today:
Field Hockey
Water Polo
Synchronized Swimming
Canoe/Kayak
Taekwondo

the point is that TV is not the only source for Olympic video coverage. Is streaming video the best? no, not really but 2nd best is better than just reading about it in the paper.

39. Yeaaahhh,
I just clicked on your link, because I only have over-the-air tv and haven't been able to see some of the events that I would like to - but guess what? Their video is only compatible with Windows or Intel Macs. :wtf:
I have a PowerPC Mac. So looks like I'm screwed both ways.

Guess I'm stuck with the main events on NBC. Sure, I've seen a few snippets of water polo, equestrian, and kayak - but they have been just that, snippets.

40. sorry...
unfortunately this is what happens when there is more content than available space...

I can tell you that NBC needs to take a look at what people think is worthy of watching. I turned on trap shooting (by accident) at a bar I frequent and the interest level perked up immensely as most patrons had never seen it as a sport. Who knows if they'll watch it again but there has to be the summer equivalent of curling out there.
