Jamaica 1st WR 9.69

This is the 1st time Jamaica has won 100m gold. Reversed places with Trinidad and Tobago from 1976.
Unbelievable. :D

22. He won World Juniors in 2003
and broke the 200M Juniors record in 2004. Bolt has been a phenom from Level III in the high school championships in Jamaica. Our high school championships have been recognized as the best high school championships in the world. All the coaches from US colleges attend annually looking for athletes.

I do not defend athletes in this global environment of drugs, but to the best of my knowledge Usain is clean. He has been exceptional from he was 12 years old.

31. Marion Jones was a high school phenom too
The dopers are always one step ahead of the testers. Remember, Jones never tested positive for drugs. Neither did Tim Montgomery, but they stripped him of his world record in the 100.

I'm sorry, but in this day and age, I am very skeptical of someone who totally obliterates a field of world class athletes and smashes a record that normally inches down by hundreds of a second.

12. I thoght it was interesting that the entire field was represented by only 3 countries...
(Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and the USA) and almost all of them were members of various track teams of US Colleges & Universities.

If Usain Bolt had not eased up 15 meters from the end, who knows what the record would be.

16. He's going to keep the record for every race he runs.
It's that simple.

No matter what race he runs, he will be in front and if he has to he will break the record.

21. Bolt is home grown - came through the high school system
Edited on Sun Aug-17-08 04:07 AM by malaise
and attends the University of Technology in Jamaica. He has dominated the 200m and 400m from high school but doesn't like the 400. He only started preparing for the 100m last year.
I don't put my head on a block for any athlete re drugs, but Bolt has been a winner and ha sbroken records at every level.
Frater and Powell are also UTech students in Jamaica. All three Jamaicans trained in Jamaica.

Richard Thompson is at LSU and is described by them as their best ever sprinter. He attended the prestigious Queen's Royal College in Trinidad and Tobago, but there is no doubt that he benefited from LSU and NCAA.

There was one athlete who wasn't from JA, T&T or USA.

29. When I saw his quarter final run ...
... I simply couldn't believe my eyes.

He won and didn't look like he had to exert himself to do it.

And he looked the same in the final.

Amazing.

And he's only 21.

I still cannot believe how fast this kid is!

25. I'd really like to see how fast he can go
I mean, he set a world record even though he was coasting from about 70m in. How fast could he go if someone actually pressed him? I'd bet he could get under 9.5 if he wanted to. I've never seen a human with a gear that high.

27. I disagree
He would have been under 9.6 tonight if he had stayed on it until the finish. I have no doubt of that. Furthermore, his start isn't perfect. He could shave another .05 or so off his time just by working on that. Remember, he has only been running the 100 for less than a year. There is room for improvement yet, scary as that might be.

30. His coach agrees with you

the middle drawing is when he won World Juniors in 2003 at the National Stadium in Jamaica with the pendant in his mouth. :D
<snip>
Hours after Usain Bolt crowned himself the best sprinter of all time by winning Jamaica's first ever Olympic gold in the 100 metres and becoming the first man to go below 9.7 seconds, his coach Glen Mills says he believes the Trelawny native can run 9.5 seconds.

38. When is the National Holiday going to be announced?
This is just wonderful! The women always come through for Jamaica and I knew that we had a very good shot at sweeping the medals in the 100m. I have the greatest respect for Kerron-she had a terrible start and she never gave up!Asafa could learn a lot from her attitude. After he saw he was behind yesterday you could see the panic set in.

Those girls were under tremendous pressure to medal because many felt that our World Champion, Veronica Campbell Brown should replace one of them even though she did not beat them in the National Trials. This is a vindication for those girls - they showed that they deserved to be there and the National Trials were not a fluke.
