Racism is not going have as much effect as I was worried about this election
Look around. Mixed families are a lot more common now than just a decade or so ago. Its becoming the norm.

I wouldn't be surprised if just about every family is now integrated in some way. I know mine is. I have lots of relatives who have married interracially. This has become the norm.

The biggest racist in this small town I live in now has 3 mixed race grandkids and no one had better say anything bad about them either. Theis guy will not hesitate to kick someones ass who uses the same racist words he used to use all the time just a few years ago.

Times are changing for the good.

4. The guy with the 3 beautiful grandkids was KKK material when I moved here
I am not joking he has done a complete turnaround. Like a different person.

2. My father told me that when he was growing up
in Indianapolis that his grandfather predicted that we would be a mixed race society in 50 years. He said that would be the end of racism. That was in 1933 or so, so I guess he was a visionary, even if he didn't quite get the date right. Too bad he didn't live to see it.

3. Nope. Looks like stupidity and greed are going to be the big problems.
As usual.

5. My daughter can't wait to put an Eracism bumper sticker
on her new car. Her old one was demolished last month when hit by a speeder -- she's pretty much okay except for whiplash, a bruised kidney, a dislocated rib and nightmares about the accident.

The day before yesterday, we bought a used 2001 Nissan Altima with the insurance money. Today our 21-year-old will proudly apply an extra Eracism sticker that we got at a bookstore in New Orleans a couple of months ago. She was really upset at losing her old sticker in the accident. Our car doesn't have room for another sticker.

Eracism = Erase Racism.

6. Ancedotal evidence not withstanding
I wouldn't count on the majority magically having been enlightened over the past 8 years. Interracial marriage accounts for only 3.8% of all marriages. It's more common, but, that's hardly the norm. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18090277/

The fact that your past raging racist/ex-KKK neighbor has changed because he has mixed-race grandkids isn't cause for rejoicing. I find it more troubling that it had to become personal for people like him to give up racist feelings, not because it's the right thing to do or it's the American ideal. Also, there are still too many walking around voting agaist their interests and wouldn't vote for a black candidate, so the USA is still far from living up to its ideal. Remember that enough voted for Bush* to allow him to steal the election.

7. How many extended family members does that 3.8% of all marriages encompass though?
Edited on Thu Aug-14-08 09:20 AM by NNN0LHI
Each one of those marriages will include hundreds of extended family members such as grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, second cousins, etc. Even good friends of the family.

See what I mean?

8. What about those without mixed-race family members?
That's the majority of the population.

11. Known extended family members
and that's a nice idea, but I don't see that as a realistic method of changing hearts and minds. It may work--in about 300 years.

10. I'm more worried about Stupidism: re the "drill here, drill now" crowd
I dont fear the racists, they are getting old and dying everyday. I fear the idiots who believe the lies they are told by McSame, and dont realize that McSame will lead us into a few more wars.
