If Cheney Forged Documents About Paris Hilton THAT Would Be Grounds for Impeachment in the USA
I. We Are the Ones Who Own You

I have to admire the determination of people who want to restore the rule of law in this country. However, Noam Chomsky put the writing on the wall over 30 years ago, and a lot of people----John Dean, Jonathan Turley, Dennis Kucinich---seem to have myopia. They do not realize that America has been trained to expect its government to lie, cheat, murder, steal in the interest of something that is nebulously called national security but which we all know in our hearts is actually the best interests of those with money and power, a sound economy being the best defense against anarchy (or so we have been told repeatedly by our trickle-down masters).

I have discussed Watergate: A Skeptical View by Noam Chomsky before. Here is a link. Anyone who has not read it, should do so. It explains exactly why Bush and Cheney have not and will not be impeached for their lies which lead us into the phony baloney war for oil in Iraq.

http://www.chomsky.info/articles/19730920.htm

Nixon attempted a small-scale coup. The political center was subjected to an attack with techniques that are usually reserved for those who depart from the norms of acceptable political belief. Powerful groups that normally share in setting public policy were excluded, irrespective of party, and the counterattack thus crosses party lines.

The Dean-Colson list of enemies, a minor feature of the whole affair, is a revealing index of the miscalculations of Nixon's mafia and raises obvious questions about the general response. The list elicited varied reactions, ranging from flippancy to indignation. But suppose that there had been no Thomas Watson or James Reston or McGeorge Bundy on the White House hate list. Suppose that the list had been limited to political dissidents, antiwar activists, radicals. Then, it is safe to assume, there would have been no front-page story in the New York Times and little attention on the part of responsible political commentators. Rather the incident, if noted at all, would have been recognized as merely another step, inelegant perhaps, in the legitimate defense of order and responsible belief.

Watergate was not about criminal activity. Watergate was about a public servant who rose above his station. Nixon was told If you target newspaper owners and movie stars, you will be slapped down. We are the ones in charge. We are the ones who own you.

II. Iraq Is a Victimless War In the Media Eye

Since the source material requires registration, here is the DU link.

The response in the US to startling new allegations that the White House directed the forgery of evidence to support its case for the war in Iraq has been surprisingly muted so far. The charges may be false, of course, but if they are seriously examined and turn out to be true, this is – or ought to be – a Watergate-sized scandal.

Maybe it ought to be but it won’t be, and there is nothing surprising about the lack of response to the story of the forgery. All you have to do is ask yourself Who are the victims? Half a million Iraqis killed, millions more displaced. Four thousand U.S. troops killed, 100,000 more injured. The foreigners do not even count in the estimation of the corporate elite who run the mainstream news media. The U.S. military counts for maybe one medium box office grossing celebrity. Not the military industrial complex---the MIC is a very important member of the VIP club. I mean the men and women who make up the armed services. Collectively they form a celebrity but few in the MSM cares about the individual soldier or marine. And forget about the huge numbers of civilians who risk their lives in Iraq. They are invisible.

Only the rich and powerful matter in this country. Why did the military jump into cover up mode when a famous athlete was killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan? Because his death meant something to the press. They could not hide that one by keeping reporters away from the funeral.

III. Paris Hilton on a Half Shell

Recently, John McCain commissioned an ad worse than LBJ’s “Daisy Ad”. In McCain’s pornographic commercial, we see Obama’s penis represented first by the leaning Tower of Pisa then by the Washington Monument as Brittney Spears and Paris Hilton, the world’s two most famous white women who do not wear panties walk by. The message is clear. Fear Obama’s sexuality. Or maybe McCain’s dirty imagination.

When Obama reacted negatively to this and other ads, the press criticized him for “playing the race card”. When Paris Hilton reacted negatively to this ad by calling McCain wrinkly and old, the press did not accuse her of playing the “age card”. They were delighted---because her family is rich as sin, and she is famous. John McCain pretended to be delighted, because what else could he do?----her family is rich as sin.

We do not have nobility in this country, but we have gods and goddesses. Paris Hilton is one of our goddesses. Someone whom the press worships. While reporters may mock and scold her, no one else is allowed to do so, especially not the politicians who are vying for the job of public servant for the nation’s rich and powerful. Politicians are supposed to know their place. In her video, Paris Hilton put John McCain back in his place.

IV. Clash of the Titans

The closest Cheney ever came to impeachment was when he attacked Ambassador Joe Wilson through his wife Valerie Plame. Turned out that both husband and wife had friends in high places, and the story---Darth Cheney endangers blonde spy---was just too good for the press to ignore. Karl Rove’s reach may have exceeded his grasp with Don Siegelman of Alabama.

Those who really want to see some justice dispensed during the closing months of this administration should focus on the Department of (In)Justice and its phony baloney prosecutions. This is where the Bush Administration Enemies List is active---even if there is no Enemies List except inside Karl Rove’s head. This is where the rich and powerful people like former NY Governor and son of billionaire Elliot Spitzer was targeted for a Mann Act prosecution that was leaked to the press. This is where Georgia Thompson was jailed in an attempt to force her to make up evidence to implicate Democrats in a bribery scandal that did not exist.

Even though Alberto Gonzales is gone, the DOJ is still the place to look for the impeachable crimes which the Bush administration has committed---the ones which the American people will recognize as grossly immoral, because they target upstanding citizens, elected politicians, business leaders, VIPs whose only crime is that they stood in the way of the Bush Coup---

That is if impeachment is your goal. If you want to change the way that Americans feel about their relationship with the rest of the world, then we need to dismantle the corporate media machine that feeds America its predigested message and create a real news industry in this country again. However, that would threaten the rich and powerful more than a dozen tricky Dicks.

1. Very interesting. So Nixon's comeuppance was due to dissing the media and Hollywood?

Didn't know that.

Edited to say, that's an informative read by Chomsky.

2. Note that Angelina Jolie's vote got equal coverage w/ whole bloody Georgian war on KO tonight.
Even though the conflict in Georgia sets the world's two nuclear superpowers at odds and is going to kill a whole lot of people. That is because the news media has its priorities shoved so far up its ass that all it can see is its own appendix, which is good for nothing even in productive people.

3. Even then, Cheney would be impeached only if he were a Democrat

4. Interesting, and does ring true
If I understand correctly 'celebrities' consists not only of known celebrities, but those who are monied, and may have clout - those we in the general population may not be aware exist, but may carry weight, or have friends within our political structure that do.

I'm going to read the Chomsky's article tomorrow. Thanks for posting this.
