Man Sets Himself Alight in Protest Against China

ANKARA, Turkey: A man doused himself with gasoline and set himself alight during a protest outside the Chinese Embassy in Turkey.

An Associated Press photographer says the man was taking part in a demonstration by Uighurs outside the embassy to coincide with the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.

Police and other demonstrators rushed to extinguish the flames. The man was taken to hospital and there was no immediate news on his condition.

Many Uighurs favor independence or greater autonomy for Xinjiang province, which takes up one-sixth of China's land mass and borders eight Central Asian countries. Uighurs are related to Turks, and Turkey is home to a Uighur community.
