Let us celebrate the Memphis primary.
Steve Cohen apparently won by an overwhelming majority. Just as whites in this country must rise above venality and pettiness to elect Obama this fall, the people of Memphis rose above petty distinctions of race and religion to bury intolerance and elect the best person to the Democratic candidacy. They did this despite the intrusions of narrow religious, racial, and gender interests. Democracy won, America won, liberalism won.

Tonight I am proud to be a Democrat, and I am proud of a million people I have never met.

5. Thank You, Sir
Not the first time you have crossed my mind today, but no one alerted on it, and so....

But this is an excellent primary result, and you are right, it deserves celebration. There are some straws in the wind to indicate things actually may be a little different this time around, and this is one of them.

2. I'm proud of the Black community for leading the way
when it comes to electing the most qualified person regardless of race.

I hope this gets wide coverage for what it REALLY is and how we need to run our country.

4. Yes, I guess I didn't say so explicitly, but I certainly meant that.
We really need to trumpet it & build it into the national consciousness. If it's OK for them to elect a white man over a black candidate because he's simply the better choice, then it's certainly OK for us melanin-challenged folks to elect a black guy because he's so much better than the alternative.

Actually, that sounds weak--I'm much more enthusiastic about Obama than that sentence would indicate. It is not ony by comparison to McNutso that he looks awfully god.

9. That's the whole point
I'm black and did not vote for Sharpton, Mosely-Braun or Keyes. They were not, in my opinion, the better candidate. Sure, I voted for Chilsom & Jackson, but, as a knowing protest. But the community as well as myself have matured politically since those days and, it shows w/ the re-election ( overwhelming ?) of Rep Cohen.

And, yes, I'm hoping that America will be "mature" enough to, elect the person best qualified to lead the country. :hi:

6. let's not forget this thread
when freepers bring up "concern" about what african americans will do if Obama is or is not elected. Clearly, the folks in Mepmphis have proved themselves to be above color of skin as character determination. Now, if the "elites" (i.e., freepers) could be so clear headed...

8. Wow, is there a non sequitur in there...
if the "elites" (i.e., freepers) could be so clear headed...then they wouldn't be FReepers!

10. Let's remember these words by Dr. Martin Luther King
In his "I Have a Dream" speech Dr. King said: "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

God bless you, good people of Memphis, for living up to the promise of this dream.
