I need a hug... a furry friend is gone. I'm heartbroken.
I know, I know.
It's not all that important given all that's going on, but I'm so sad.
My sister had to put her dog down tonight and I am seriously bumming.
Make a negative comment and I'll rip your lungs out.
But, this is DU and I've been on here for years and I've cried at other people's losses.
Now, it's my turn.
I know you'll understand.

Meet Emma-bear.

This dog had a soul.
I held her when she was no bigger than a softball thirteen years ago.
My sister lives on top of a mountain in N.E. Pennsylvania, so she had a perfect life for a golden.
Lot's of room to run and chase shit.
As she grew, my sister grew too.
Her and her husband (who I love like my own brother) and the two boys provided a great life for this dog.
And this dog paid them back BIG time.
But, this is about me.
I don't have a furry friend and this dog KNEW that.

When I would visit, sometimes every few months, other times every few years, this dog knew I was coming days before.
By the time I pulled up in the driveway, she was going NUTS.
It was like she knew her job was to make me happy.
From the moment I climbed out of the car until the moment I left, she stayed by my side.
She slept with me, followed me everywhere, tail wagging and leaning into me, never wanting to be out of my sight.
I would miss her for weeks when I left.
I'll miss her for a lifetime now.

Dogs are a perfect friend.
All they ask is that you let them love you, and they will.
When your sick, when your down, when your happy, they love you anyway.
When I read about someone abusing an animal I want to stomp their guts out, because I sure could use a furry friend.
But, I can't bear leaving them alone for 10 or 11 hours a day.

And now one of my furry friends is gone and I'm seriously bumming.
If you have a furry fuzz face give them a hug for me.
I GET IT.

I'm heartbroken.

I'm cross posting from the lounge because I got a lot of friends on here and I don't give a shit...

16. What a beautiful dog!
There's no way to make it not painful now, but the pain does subside in a few days, then you go through a period which is not super-painful, but you miss them a lot. Finally you reach a point where you just appreciate them and what they were in your life. Each of our pets gets a place in our hearts forever. And you know you have a place in her heart. She was very lucky to have you for her owner. Hope you feel better soon!

22. I have a feeling Emma Bear was really your dog; she just lived
with your sister until those times when you could get there. Don't get me wrong, she loved your sister and her family, but Emma knew. I'm sorry for your loss of Emma - I had to do it not too long ago and my best friend (bless her heart) sat with mine while they put him down; I just can't do it. I also have 2 cats and, while I know a cat can't take the place of Emma, cats can be left alone for hours (even days) on end and they really are good companions. Maybe you might consider adopting one from the shelter; you won't regret it. Rest in peace, Emma - good dog.

There is no sorrow like the loss of a beloved dog. The loyalty, love and laughter they bring to "their" people is unique and a treasure for those so blessed to love and be loved by a dog-friend.

I know my time is coming to lose my 13 year-old dog friend, so I share even now at leat a bit of the sorrow you bear for Emma-Bear. She is gorgeous and wise, and I know that some part of your heart is filled with gratitude for all that you and she shared throughout her life. You are both blessed by the bonds and love you've shared.

Peace be with you, dear one, on this sad and lonely night, and with her.

Blessings and love to you,

27. I'm so sorry to hear that.
What a beautiful dog. I think it IS important. Dogs do have a soul. You can see that clearly when you look at Emma-bears sweet face. It sounds like she had a good home, with plenty of good people to love her. You can't really ask more than that from life, especially if you are a dog, because not everyone understands that they are sentient beings with intelligence, personality and spirit.

Not everyone understands how devastating it is to lose a pet. I can't imagine losing a friend of 13 years. My Chow is 11 and I don't even want to think about losing her, but will have to face that someday.

A few years ago, I took in a rescue dog who was crippled with arthritis. My daughter named him 'Freddy' after Freddy Mercury, since they had called him 'Pigpen' at the shelter and that just didn't seem right. I had him for 18 months, and just adored the little fellow. He eventually got to the point where I had to put him down at the vets. It was so much harder than I imagined, even though he was suffering. My sister and nephew were there with me. When he was gone, we went into the lobby and this large cat with Freddy's same coloring came out from the back and just sat in the middle of the room and stared and us. The ladies at the desk told us this was very unusual for him, so sometimes I like to think maybe Freddie's spirit went in a body that was whole to tell us goodbye. Yeah, I know, but it seemed coincidental and appropriate. I was pretty upset for a few months over his loss.

I understand your sadness, and I'm so sorry. Basically, the only thing that heals the sadness is time and remembering your friend when she was alive and happy.

74. About the souls,
anyone who has ever shared their life with a furface knows without a shred of doubt that they have a soul just like humans. To think otherwise is patently absurd.

Emma-bear was such a good dog. Thank you for sharing her story with us.

When you can think it through, you should know that most dogs sleep the whole time you are away from home, so they don't agonize about being left.

And if you have two (not from the same litter, though) then they each have a pet. :)

Remember, there are lots of dogs - even Golden Retrievers - who are in rescue right now and need homes. They would lots rather have someone who could be with them a few hours a day and love them than not to have a forever home at all.

Delaware Valley Golden Retriever Rescue in PA has been sending out urgent notices to those of us in the fancy.

They are completely full and can't take another dog in. All their foster homes are full. The downturn in the economy is causing many people to have to give up their dogs when they lose their homes.

They really, really need loving homes for their Goldens.

29. JeffR and I were just discussing this not an hour ago ...
Edited on Wed Aug-06-08 11:07 PM by NanceGreggs
... how DUers feel free to post about the loss of a pet, knowing that they will get responses saying, "I know just how you feel," and also knowing those responses are sincere - because it's happened to so many of us, and we all appreciate how much it hurts when it happens to someone else.

All of the in-fighting here, all of the criticisms of each other's opinions, all of the nastiness that ensues from disagreeing with each other's choices - it all stops and goes away, if only temporarily, when one of our own loses one of their own.

The wagons get circled :grouphug:, and friends :pals: hold you close - all to say :loveya: in a time when you need it most.

Our beloved pets give us so much - and the affection for each other that is triggered by their passing is a testament to their invaluable contribution to all of our lives.

We're all here for you, my friend. And that's just the way Emma-Bear would have wanted it.

33. Very Sorry
We lost our Golden Retriever 8 years ago and still miss him.

The sound of his tail thumping the floor when we entered the house... How he never got tired of chasing that ball... How much he adored our cat... The way he would lay on his back and hold a chew toy in his paws...

I can never forget what a great companion he was and how hard the final days were.

It meant a lot to us that so many other people understood.

She was family, and may she rest in peace.

Here is the song Shannon by Henry Gross

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzB5OZpksoY

Another day is at end
Mama says she's tired again
No one can even begin to tell her
I hardly know what to say
But maybe it's better that way
If Papa were here I'm sure he'd tell her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our backyard

Mama tries hard to pretend
That things will get better again
Somehow she's keepin' it all inside her
But finally the tears fill our eyes
And I know that somewhere tonight
She knows how much we really miss her

Shannon is gone
I hope she's drifting out to sea
She always loved to swim away
Maybe she'll find an island
With a shaded tree
Just like the one in our back yard ...
Just like the one in our back yard .....

39. This is why I love DU and all my DU friends...
Yeah, I've been on the verge of crying all day and now I'm a mess.
My sister is all tore up.
Emma had a soul and she had a regal way about her.
She KNEW she had it going on.
She knew she was the bomb.

But, now for some happy shit.
Emma had a LOT of friends that loved her, and she loved them all back.
My sister lives a different life than I do.
She's married.
I'm not.
She's got TONS of long term friends.
I have a couple.
They have LOTS of parties at their house and Emma was in the middle of all of them.
Lot's of pets, hugs, people yelling "EMMA-BEAR!" and she would respond with tail wagging enthusiasm, jumping and being happy.

One night at a New Years Eve Party I watched her steal a rib off a paper plate, knock over a beer left on the floor and lap it up, run out on to the deck and JUMP off of it into a snowbank, and then run back inside and slide up next to me covered in snow and put her head in my lap and lick my hand like she was saying "How ya like me now?"

I love you freaking guys...
I feel better already.

Now here's a hug for you  I'm so sorry for your loss.

40. Hugs
I know exactly what you're saying and how you feel.

Your heart is broken.

I've lost three great 'soul dogs' in my life. And I hate anyone who would dare make fun of me too .... or anyone who hates dogs, for that matter. People who hate, or even don't like dogs, must have never met a great dog or don't have the brains or sensitivity to understand how great many of these 4-legged people are. Such people cannot be MY friend---my friends "must love dogs." (Sorry for the little speech. They wouldn't be reading this thread anyway.)

I hope you, your sister and her family can find another soulmate, not to forget or replace dear Emma, but to honor her.

SAVE A LIFE WHEN YOU CAN.

75. My new (new to me - he's actually 7) dog
converted one of those strange beasts. My boyfriend was quite vocal about not liking pet ownership and my saying that it wasn't me who owned the doggy didn't convince him. He and Oly are fast friends now and in fact, my boyfriend now understands the bond that happens. He keeps saying, "Is it just me or is this the greatest dog EVAH!!!" I'm not going to disagree - Oly is right up there.

43. a few months back I had to say good bye to my best Friend of 14 and

My four legged mate had literally saved my life twice so no matter the hoops we went through trying to save him I still felt I had betrayed him by not having some miracle to pull out of my hat. 49. I'm also heartbroken.
I'm sorry to hear of your great loss.

As of one month ago I am now alone. Both of my beloved companions are gone. I still can't believe it's over. Like a beautiful story coming to an end.

I went on a long journey with two cats that were born in the forest right outside my cabin in the woods, years ago. We moved up the coast to various properties. And even one with a huge barn. My photo collection must be half just of these two.

I'll never be the same. And I'll never stop feeling the loss. I honestly wanted to follow Farnsworth to wherever he went last month.

So you are not alone. Although that doesn't help much. Oh well. It's all temporary. At least we loved. It's better to love and hurt than to have never loved at all. Consider it a privilege.

50. Giveme
backmycountry - please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of Emma-bear. Apparently, she was your niece! The expression in her eyes really comes through in that photo, and she surely loved you as much as you loved her. What a beautiful animal.

I can totally relate to the depth of your sadness - on Monday I had to put my beautiful 14 year-old black kitty down. It is heartbreaking to say good-bye to them and at first, seems unbearable. It's the unconditional love that gets to me every time with every pet I've had.

It's good you came here - we're thinking of you and yes, we're with you.

64. I'm so sorry for your loss. We had to put our son's 15 y.o. crazy lab mix down this summer...
Our son is 30 and he's had that dog half his life, ever since he picked her out at the Humane Society shelter when she was just a few months old. He was heartbroken to have to make that decision. Zima was with him through every mighty storm of his adolescence and on into his adulthood. She gave him the unconditional love he needed like a plant needs water and sun. Whenever he lived someplace where he couldn't have a dog, she came home to us. As I told my husband, who else was going to take a dog with a screw loose?

When we visited him at the end of May we could see she was in real trouble, and she hurt so cruelly with arthritis, so we helped him decide to bring her back home to our compassionate vet. I held her head in my lap and stroked her ears for the hundreds-of-miles drive home, then a few days later did the same when the vet came out to our car to gave her the first shots. Our son couldn't do it -- and I understood why he needed to shut himself in the guest room and cry.

She was a very big dog with an aggression problem that we all had to work on her entire life. The inside of my front door still has the claw marks where she tried to get out at whoever dared to stand there while I yelled "Down!" at her and spritzed her face with Windex (a very dilute, harmless, product that smells funny).

But she loved me -- when I sat at the kitchen table studying or reading the newspaper she would walk through with her nails click-clicking on the tiles and pause just long enough to kiss my elbow. Slurp -- she loved me. And she thought my son was God.

Be at peace in the Happy Hunting Grounds, Zima and now Emma-bear. for the fuzz-faces, and  for givemebackmycountry.

Hekate

83. All the hugs you need from me.
I just had my 13 year old Golden mix put down 3 months ago. She wasn't suffering yet, but she couldn't get up hardly at all any more. And my 11 year old Golden-lab mix, just mopes around too.

Remember these.

Ten Commandments for Pet Owners

1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years or more. Any separation from you will be painful.

2. Give me time to understand what you want from me. Do not break my spirit with your temper, though I will always forgive you. Your patience will teach me more effectively.

3. Please have me spayed or neutered.

4. Treat me kindly, my beloved friend, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for your kindness than mine. Don't be angry with me for long, and don't lock me up as punishment. After all, you have your job, your friends, your entertainment, I only have you.

5. Speak to me often. Even if I don't understand your words, I understand your voice when it's speaking to me. Your voice is the sweetest sound I ever hear, as you must know by my enthusiasm whenever I hear your footsteps.

6. Take me in when it's cold and wet. I'm a domestic animal and am no longer accustomed to the bitter elements. I ask for little more than your gentle hands petting me. Keep my bowl filled with water. Feed me good food so that I may stay well to romp and play. By your side, I stand ready, willing and able to share my life with you, for that is what I live for. I'll never forget how well you've treated me.

7. Don't hit me. Remember, I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite.

8. Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I've been out in the sun too long, my ear may hurt, or my heart may be getting weak.

9. Take care of me when I get old. For you will grow old, too.

10. When I am old, or when I no longer enjoy good health, please do not make heroic efforts to keep me going. I am not having fun. Just see to it that my trusting life is taken gently. And be with me on that difficult journey when it's time to say goodbye. Never say, "I just can't bear to watch it."

Everything is easier for me when you are there. I will leave this earth knowing with my last breath that my fate was always safest in your hands. I love you.

84. Losing a puppy
is one of the most horrible and empty feelings in the world. You don't realize how much the little stuff matters until they are gone. I lost one of my puppies (okay, she was a dog, she was close to 8 years old) back in 80's. She was attacked by a neighbor's dog and died as a result of the injuries. To make matters worse, my boyfriend of 8 years and I were breaking up at the time. I missed the puppy more than I missed the boyfriend. fwiw, I think he missed the puppy more than I did too.

It took me nearly 10 years before my heart was stolen by another puppy. Now I've got three of them. I've already told everyone that I will need to be sedated when the first one goes.

89. I grieve with you
We lost our precious boy 2 months ago and every day I look for him even though I know he's not there. We had him for 13 yrs and...well, you know. We still find ourselves breaking into tears. One friend told me that if he'd died before she had a dog herself, she wouldn't have understood why we were so upset. But she has had a dog now for only 6 months and told me that her devastation would be complete too. So quickly do they move into our hearts and own the place. One day another will colonize our hearts but we can't even think about a successor now.

May I suggest everyone give a contribution, no matter how small, to a no-kill shelter? Or if money is a problem, you could collect old blankets and sheets from neighbors. Every shelter needs a constant supply of these things.

96. People
have much to learn from their fur friends. Dogs, for example, know more about unconditional love, loyalty, and forgiveness than we do, and are willing to share with us whenever we give them the opportunity.

My mom lost her golden a couple of years back to spinal cancer; he was only 4. She still isn't "over" it.

He was my first thought when I saw your pic, remembering the day I sat on the floor, with him stretched out beside me, the way he rested his head on my lap and sighed while I gently told my mom that he was in pain, done, and ready to move on.

Emma will remain in your heart and your memories, just as the humans we've lost do. May her memory always bring you joy.

100. So sorry for your loss
I have 3 dogs and I often rescue any I find on the highway. I have put 3 Golden Retrievers in my car. One found a home with the father of a co-worker. The other two were a mother and son both under 3, and they were returned to their owners. Goldies are by far the sweetest, gentlest, most obedient and soulful of any dog I've known. I have little dogs so it's a completely different vibe. Anyone is a Goldie's friend, that's why they were so easy to get in my car. I pulled over and acted like we were old buddies who arranged to meet on that street for fun and they all ran over and got in.

Life is hard. The world is a mess. There is more wisdom in embracing the sweet pure love of a furry friend in response than most anything else. The price of that love is the pain of the loss but given the choice I'd pay that price in order to know that love.
Once again so sorry for your very real loss.

Have you heard of the rainbow bridge? Visit petloss.com for more support. There's a lot of support on the web.

BIG HUG!

Emma-bear looks just like one of my dogs growing up. What a sweet face! I am so sorry for the pain you are going through and wish there was something I could say to make you feel better. But the fact is we mourn for the people and animals we love because we know our lives will never be the same again, but you had the privilege of knowing her. And eventually that pain will turn to warm memories and comfort.
God Bless you!

103. From a furry friend lover and owner (or would that be owned?), I get it...
and you have my sympathies. I will give my furpals a hug and tell them it is from you. Then I'll give them one from me.

Hold on a sec....

Done... and they send you a slurp and a tail wag, cuz they get it, too.

Take care.

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss.
And It is absolutely has IMPORTANT as ANYTHING else that is going on in the nation and the world.
Love is invaluable and always in short supply compared to all the other manipulations out there.
I celebrate the fact that you got to meet and share time with such a wonderful and wise soul.
We will all miss Emma bear because a little of this worlds luster has gone out with her passing.

Your tribute to her is absolutely perfect.

It was a coincidence finding your story today. I had to euthanize my best friend only a few hours ago, a sweet beagle who gave me joy and comfort for 13 years. He had an aggressive form of cancer with a tumor closing around his trachea and esophagus. It was the least I could do to give him peace and end his suffering after all he has given me. But my heart hurts. God bless you and your beautiful furry friend.

"A dog is the only friend you'll have who will break your heart just once."

...one last word of farewell, Dear Master and Mistress. Whenever you visit my grave, say to yourselves with regret but also with happiness in your hearts at the remembrance of my long and happy life with you: "Here lies one who loved us and whom we loved." No matter how deep my sleep I shall hear you, and not all the power of death can keep my spirit from wagging a grateful tail. -- from "The Last Will and Testament of Silverdene Emblem O'Neill" (as transcribed by Eugene O'Neill)

134. A special hug, my friend
there are few words for that very special bond, and another furkid-parent understands. I'm here via PM if ya need a hand-hold or a shoulder-squeeze. That's open for any and all DUers who may be wounded by the loss of a furkid. Part of what I do is non-denominational, non-religious-affiliated Animal Companion Chaplain; basically, someone who takes your pain and tears seriously.

Give, I know this will be a hard night, but know that Emma's at peace and still loving you. Hang on to that love until you meet again at The Bridge. She'll want you to.

Rev

PS: I wrote this when I lost my Sadie. It helped me feel better. I help it will help you, too.

Everything I Know about Love, I Learned from a Little Dog

Dedicated to Sadie-Lynn and Ashley-Marie I, both now waiting for me just across The Rainbow Bridge

Love is loyal. No matter how many times the ball is thrown, I’ll always come back; with or without it.

Love listens intently, even if the listener doesn’t understand every word. Trust the heart to translate.

Hands are for petting and saying “I’m here, still loving you.”

Love speaks with a completely honest heart and from the best motives.

Wet kisses and warm snuggles always lighten the saddest heart.

No one needs to pray or cry alone if your best buddy is close.

Take some time to chase butterflies, even if you don’t catch any. The pleasure is in doing something a little silly and a lot of fun together.

Ice cream tastes better when shared. One bowl, two spoons, please!

Some say it best by saying nothing at all. One loving “lean” is worth a mouthful of “I love you’s”. Humans squeeze hands — it’s the same thing.

Being a willing listener is likely to get you hugged.

Love is for always. If someone has ever loved you, you will always have that moment with you.

The one who waits patiently for you to arrive deserves lots of kisses. Kisses are easy to make and there are always more to give away.

Someone misses you every time they don’t see you, even if you’re just in the next room.

Joyous greetings are always in order when your love returns.

Petting the fur-kid does just as much good for the human doing the petting.

Saturday afternoon naps with your best friend refresh the body and restore the soul.

In the arms of one who loves you is the safest place in the world.

Happy sighs say it all. Puppysize say even more.

136. Heaven
I'm sorry for your loss

I've lost two of my furry friends over the last couple of years, it hurts

this made me smile:

A man and his dog were walking along a road. The man was enjoying the scenery, when it suddenly occurred to him that he was dead.

He remembered dying, and that the dog walking beside him had been dead for years. He wondered where the road was leading them.

After a while, they came to a high, white stone wall along one side of the road It looked like fine marble. At the top of a long hill, it was broken by a tall arch that glowed in the sunlight.

When he was standing before it he saw a magnificent gate in the arch that looked like mother-of-pearl, and the street that led to the gate looked like pure gold. He and the dog walked toward the gate, and as he got closer, he saw a man at a desk to one side.

When he was close enough, he called out, 'Excuse me, where are we?'

'This is Heaven, sir,' the man answered.

'Wow! Would you happen to have some water?' the man asked.

'Of course, sir. Come right in, and I'll have some ice water brought right up.'

The man gestured, and the gate began to open.

'Can my friend,' gesturing toward his dog, 'come in, too?' the traveler asked.

'I'm sorry, sir, but we don't accept pets.'

The man thought a moment and then turned back toward the road and continued the way he had been going with his dog.

After another long walk, and at the top of another long hill, he came to a dirt road leading through a farm gate that looked as if it had never been closed. There was no fence.??As he approached the gate, he saw a man inside, leaning against a tree and reading a book.

Excuse me!' he called to the man. 'Do you have any water?'

'Yeah, sure, there's a pump over there, come on in.'

'How about my friend here?' the traveler gestured to the dog.

'There should be a bowl by the pump.'

They went through the gate, and sure enough, there was an old-fashioned hand pump with a bowl beside it. The traveler filled the water bowl and took a long drink himself, then he gave some to the dog. When they were full, he and the dog walked back toward the man who was standing by the tree.

'What do you call this place?' the traveler asked.

'This is Heaven,' he answered.

'Well, that's confusing,' the traveler said. 'The man down the road said that was Heaven, too.'

'Oh, you mean the place with the gold street and pearly gates? Nope. That's hell.'

'Doesn't it make you mad for them to use your name like that?'

'No, we're just happy that they screen out the folks who would leave their best friends behind.'

I had a German Shepherd X and a Lab/Boarder Collie X that I got at roughly the same time. They grew up together, played together, grew old together, got sick together and died together. I always think of this song from my childhood everytime I think of them..I miss you Ranger and Stryder.

All Good Things
by Klaatu

I never had a closer friend than you
I never had such good times as the ones we used to have together
You're the one I told my problems to
Throughout the years remained true blue
No I never had a closer friend than you

But all good things must end
No use trying to pretend it isn't so
When it's time you gotta go
But I never had a better friend than you

I know it sounds a trifle odd
To those who've never had a dog
But I never had a closer friend than you

But all good things must end
No use crying for the dead and that's a fact
All my tears won't bring you back
But I never had a better friend than you
No I'll never have a better friend than you

I am so sorry for your loss.

I loved my sister's dog, "Cagney", too, who disappeared the summer of 2004.

We think that, as my sister had just moved with him to a new house, that he freaked being in a new location and tried to follow my sister when she left for work. We never found him...

He would get so excited when I whispered to him, "walk", and I would get the leash.

Wonderful memories, such a sweet, kind, and gentle animal.

Not knowing what happened to him is quite painful, thus I intend to go to a local animal medium...

Having had furry loved ones continuously for the last 40 years, that's many furry loved ones. I send prayers and love to you and to your sister and her family. Emma's face says it all. Pure unselfish love. Welcome to the club of heartbroken humans whose pets went on to the rainbow bridge. If you haven't read about the poem, look it up on google. Sorry, I use to have the website. All our beloved furry friends wait for us to join them then we go into heaven together. Because as some wise person said a long time ago. If heaven doesn't allow pets, I wouldn't want to be there either. Our furry friends may not be here with us, but we sure have the memories. O8)

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I had to make the call to our vet to put our dog to sleep 4 weeks ago tomorrow, just 1 day after our newborn son came home from the hospital. Our vet sent us this poem afterward, still chokes me up...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

All the best to you and your family.

It is exactly the same as losing a child. the love is the same. Maybe stronger in some cases. Greave. Cry. write to us. We get it.

160. Emma-Bear
What a beautiful Golden Emma-Bear was. I have two, Murphy and Devon. They bring unabashed joy to our lives. Emma-Bear has that wonderful worried Golden look. My Devon looks just like that although she has not yet gone gray. I loved the part about her leaning on you; that is exactly what Devon does. Murphy sits at attention and just looks at you. I really believe that I am the privileged one because of Devon and Murphy. In fact, having the love and respect of any dog is a gift ----- I can not imagine life without our best friends. Please be happy knowing that you were loved by Emma-Bear. She gave you moments of pure joy and friendship ---- how lucky does that make you. Even as the years go by she will still be with you. I lost Jake over six years ago - he was also a Golden and the heartache never dims but the smiles are always there too.

I just had to put my 12 year old dog to sleep in May. I

Dogs bond with in ways that are so profound there just aren't enough words to describe.

I had to put my last dog down and it was the saddest day of my life.

About three years latter a little black lab pup came into our lives and he took over where the last left off.

Its the best way to move on.

It is tragic to lose such a wonderful friend. Our fur babies are never with us long enough.

When I lost my 19 year old kitty a few years ago, I thought the world had ended. My husband and I just sat in the living room for three days and cried. It was on Dec 23rd we had to put her down and it felt like my soul had been ripped out. We didn't even go to our families houses for Christmas that year, they all understood. We have her ashes in a little box and we actually have it on a shelve that is kind of a shrine, with some pictures of her and her collar.... Brandy was our baby.

Hugs and thoughts to you tonight, I understand what you're going through.

If someone already hasn't posted it, google "the Rainbow Bridge" poem. There are also pet grieving websites that I found very helpful and comforting in the days that followed our loss.

We have two young kitties now that both know they have a lot to live up to. :) I hope they are with us a long time.

we lost our latest rescue girl to overwhelming cancer at the beginning of this year...

but we got another rescue girl - a puppy mill mom that was kept in a trailer for SEVEN YEARS while she was driven around all over the country and force-bread...they even forced c-sections on her so many times that her uterus was in bad shape when they rescued her and we got her.

She's fine in her new home - learning to be a golden for the first time now...

I cannot say anything enough that will ease your sorrow - but know from experience that it will get sweeter and less painful as time goes by...

Goldens rule! We lost our Casey two years ago last month and we miss her to this day. She was so wise and knowing and thoughtful--a true furry angel just like your Emma-Bear, I'm sure. Sounds like she had a long, wonderful, Golden life and now Casey has another sweetheart to play with! My deepest sympathies to you, your sister and her family.

Peace...

PS to NorCal folks who can donate money, time or your home to a Golden in need:

There are quite a few of these wonderful dogs looking for homes. Many, many are innocent victims of the mortgage and economic crisis in this country and would love nothing more than to find a forever home.

Emma is so beautiful and it is evident from the picture that she was really loved.

The grief is overwhelming I am only now, two years after my Westy died of cancer, getting over his passing. please get another dog soon, it will lessen the misery. I waited two years not being able to be near anything that reminded me of him. I buried him under a 100 year old oak in my yard. A few months ago I got a Schnauzer puppy, She is curled up in my lap at this moment and sends her love. Anyone who has had a dog will know what you are going through. Best wishes for you getting through this. It is sad that dogs only live for 14-15 years and we go on and on forever.

197. There aren't really words
It happens, everything dies, blah blah, you know all that. Loosing a friend hurts like nothing else in the world, whether it's a furry friend or not. A friend is a friend is a friend. If we have souls then so do they, period. Right now you're hurting as much as ever, and all I can say is I'm sorry.

I had a little kitty named Roz. She was part of a litter that I took in when they were new born. They were born in a shelter and probably picked up infections there because two of them died from "distemper" within a few weeks. Little Roz was runtish and I thought she would go next, but I fought tooth and nail for her, giving her antibiotics and extra formula to supplement her nursing. She pulled through and from then on she was permanently attached to me. She used to jump up on my shoulders and ride around on me all the time. She was a tiny thing, just about 7 pounds, but she could jump straight from the ground to my shoulder in one leap... and I'm about 5'10". She was so full of energy when she raced around and played. And she loved me so much. Whenever I sat at my desk she would climb up and curl up on my shoulders and nuzzle my ears. She was like a little angel who always hovered over me. She always wanted to be with me, whether I was sick, depressed, happy, or anything.

When she was a little less than 2 years old I noticed she was eating less and getting skinnier. A blood test from the vet found that her kidneys were shutting down. I still I don't know what it was -- they ruled out any toxins but called it an infection of the kidney tubules, unknown cause. I did everything for her they recommended, a whole regiment of medications, IV fluid infusions that I had to give her at home to flush out her system (and she behaved herself remarkably well during all that). I made special food for her to try to tempt her to eat more. But further blood tests showed that her kidneys were just getting worse and worse, and I could tell she was suffering when all she wanted to do was sleep under a blanket all day and night. When my vet told me she would probably not last more than a week I knew I had to put her down. When they shaved her for injection we saw that she had hematomas all over and her little veins were all collapsed. As hard as it was for me to accept that she couldn't be saved (especially when it had worked before), I could see that her suffering just had to end. I tried all kinds of ways to beat myself up for letting it happen, for not catching on early enough that she was sick, but the evidence showed that nothing could have made a difference. Like us, like everything that lives, she just got a certain time and no more.

I never got to have furry friends growing up because my mom is allergic to just about everything. But having my own furry friends as an adult changed everything. When you lose a pet like that it just plain sucks, and nothing can make it better. But I think we are still lucky, those of us who get to have a furry friend in the first place, one that truly loves us. Not everybody has a friend who loves them like that, but I wish everybody could.

My deepest regret for your loss. She looks like a wonderfully dog, and a friendly one to:)

I have "LOST" my cats, have to give them away because of allergy. I know them are in good hands, and have good homes. But I do miss them, and I do have regrets for not have them today. My grown up cat, was sort of "adopting" my for a couple of year ago, the owner was neglecting the little cat and I somehow fall for her. And she was coming home to me, and was there and found a nice home. She was little spiled if I would ad, when it was dinnertime I someday was given some food to her, specially on saturday. And she loved it. Specially the times I was given little beef to her. Then she would lay on the sofa as big as she was on her back and just lie still because she was stuffed up to her neck. And she really loved to be cuddled on her stomage (very seldom for a cat by the way). She trusted me, and I was given her everything I could possible give her. Because she have had an bad history from years back..

And I was also given the luxury to have seen tree Small kitten come to life. She was pregnant, and on my sofa monday before easter tree small kitten was coming out. Small, innocent helpless kitten. And I was given the opportunity to se them, from their first time on this earth, to I have to give them away, because my allergy and asma was taking its toll on my halt.. But in the meantime I was given the right, or the privilege to se how the small kitten as the mother was bounding, and the small kitten was going from defenseless and with no eyes, to tree wonderfully fast roaming kitten who on the other side was little of a nightmare. But on the other hand was so wonderfully to have. When they was tired, in the evening they often was coming to the living rom, and was lying in my lap, on my shoulder or on my head. To female kitten and one male. I would miss them for the rest of my life, and wonder, have I been doing the right thing when I was given them away?. I hope it was the right thing, and I know they was given good homes.. But I do have regret because of it. And the home is so much more silent now... No kitten who are fighting them self and everything else. ANd no kitten WHO is lying on my lap when I am typing this word, and look at my with trust in their ayes.. Warm, cuddly, and polite.. But I have the pictures of them, from the first week to the day before I was giving them away. But it hurts to look at them, it does..

I do miss them, and I can understand that you miss your friend, It is a hard time, but you would over time come over it. And if possible get a new friend. A new heary friend who would love you with all its heart and all his bones.. Just try to take the time to heal the wound who are inside you today.

Dogs can give a special kind of unconditional love and loyalty that warms our hearts and sees us through the trials and tribulations of life. They ask so little, yet give so much.

I know what pain you are feeling. For what it's worth, take comfort in the wonderful life this dear furry friend lived, and the love that she knew. My thoughts are with you and your sister's family.

202. Goldens are like that
Edited on Thu Aug-07-08 10:03 PM by BeatleBoot
As are retrievers in general.

Every morning that I wake up, my yellow lab is there - not just to play - but she looks into my eyes and has this personality that is just a hoot.

Sometimes when I'm getting dressed, she'll steal my socks before I can put them on.

But when she knows I'm serious (a workday) she'll bring me my shoes when I'm getting ready for work.

Like I said, quite the personality.

With every dog I've owned, I've always said to myself, "don't get too attached because you know how you had to put the last one down."

But every dog I've ever had is my best friend. You can't help but get attached.

Emma-Bear was a sweetheart. You can tell because it's in her eyes.

Love is in her eyes.

Sweetie, there's nothing but love in her eyes.

204. They are always there for us
We lost our 19 year old cat last week, and it really hurt. She's buried next to our other two beneath the apple tree and morning glories. We were fortunate to have had her for so long.
The first couple of days are the toughest, and at feeding time there's one less bowl to fill and the grief hits again.

Someone sent this to me, and I hope it works for you as it does for me in coming to grips with the situation.

"A few days ago I received a sympathy note from Bill Hoegemeyer, the veterinarian. It opened with a verse by Irving Townsend: "We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle…"
Now as I write this, on a gray winter day by the fireside, I can almost feel her light tread moving from my head and my heart down through my fingertips to the keys of the typewriter. People may surprise you with unexpected kindness. Dogs have a depth of loyalty that we often seem unworthy of. But the love of a cat is a blessing, a privilege in this world.
They say when you die and go to heaven all the dogs and cats you ever owned in your life come running to meet you.
Until that day, rest in peace Cuddles."

206. What a beautiful dog
Please accept my condolences on the lost of your dear friend. Two years ago this month I lost my own friend, Ross, a wonderful black Samoyed mix. People who don't understand this pain, this grief, maybe the don't understand the joy of years shared either.

My thoughts are with you.

209. In my heart I weep...
Rainbow Bridge

211. They are angels with fur
I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost 6 beloved dogs and I know what a void they leave in one's life. Dogs are miracles and their only flaw is that she live such short lives. A tragic flaw. So we must cherish every moment we have with them. Here is a snuggle from my best girl, Roxie.

I am so sorry for your loss. 3 years ago we lost a furry member of our family unexpectedly after a surgery. Blondie too, was a one of a kind dog. loving, affectionate and very protective of her kids. When I say her kids I mean any child that was near her. This dog had a sense of humor and loved to grab my son's coat sleeve and drag him through the snow in our backyard.

When ever we left the house I would tell Blondie "Okay we're leaving you're on duty now" and she would perk up and take the command very seriously until we got back.

After the vet called and told us she was gone, we went to his office to say good bye to her. I rubbed her head one last time and before we left I told her, "Okay girl you're off duty now"

Reading of your loss and all the kind postings to you has brought back so many memories of my Blondie, I know just what you are feeling. It will get better but it will take time. Even then years later you will see something like this and the memories will come back and the tears will start flowing. Let them flow for the memories won't be sad but about all the good things and good times you had with Emma Bear.

214. That gorgeous dog looks JUST like my male dog
He is at least 13 years old. We aren't sure, he was two or so? when he adopted us so many years ago..He is active and healthy, but he pants at rest with the A/C on, lately. He's old, for a big dog. Vet says it is his age.

He looks so much like your dog it made me want to post. The color of his fur, the facial features..made me realize that when his butt sneaks outta the gate, We can forgive him. He's an intelligent dog, but tries to be the leader of the family pack. My daughter is 19, known him for all these years. I dont wanna think about the devastation to her. Or to my nine year old, that has known him all her life.

Im so sad for you, and for your family. Dogs are our family. Here's a pic of our boy. Im SO sorry for your loss. She is gone but not forgotten, ever, EVER!

215. Tears. Hugs. I am so sorry. What a beautiful girl!
She has so much soul in her eyes!

Reading what you wrote my heart started breaking. I know all too well what its like to love and lose an animal. Every time I've had to go thru this it's like a void of grief and missing and heartbreak.

I'm crying along with you. I can only imagine how you must miss her. I'm so so sorry.
