Breaking: Angelina Jolie's father supports John McCain! Anyone see that this morning?
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 12:05 PM by Danieljay
He wrote an editorial critical of Obama. When asked, he said he lacked experience and get this: he has a questionable past given his mentors and his history. Huh. Wonder what he was really wanting people to hear?

Can someone explain to me why this even gets mention? I despise these people and their little digs at Obama. Its never about how good McCain is, its always about Obama. And the American people buy this shit.

20. Regardless, she's already gone so far as to legally take Voight out of her name.
Their probably won't be a "Grandfather's Day" any time soon.

I'm registered unaffiliated but I can guarantee that my values are far more aligned to the democratic party today.

26. i have read numerous quotes by angelina
some of which could be thought of as democrat'esque, and others republican'esque.

Which leads me to reasonably conclude, along with her registration as an independent, that she is in fact ... an independant.

27. Good for her.
And she was estranged with her father before the birth of her children and that doesn't appear to be changing. It's not unreasonable to think that their political differences could be a small part. One only has to look at her "works" in humanitarian issues to surmise that she leans more left than right.

35. no. i'm just stating my opinion based on available evidence
and asking why you believe what you do. If you read that as a (lord forbid) CHALLENGE, more power to ya.

She's said she's an independant, she's made comments and such in the media that are consistent with that, and it's thus a reasonable conclusion.

If you disagree. Groovy

11. But here's the connection...
Voight played a Viet Nam vet in some of his movies.

In the small Repug brain, they will decide McCain't should be Prez, because he's a vet.

7. It was.
Here's the thread.

("Jon Voight, now officially on my 'do not see' movie list , EVER again")
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=389&topic_id=3711721

On a side note, the Seinfeld episode with George buying Jon Voight's car aired a couple of days ago- I made sure to catch it because of that thread. Very funny.

18. are you kidding me?
He's on your 'do not see movie list' because he's a repub.

I don't give a flying #$(#$( what an actor's politics are. I want to see movies with good acting and good directing.

Boycotting movies or actors or whatever because of their politics is the height of political absurdity fwiw.

Art is art (not that voight's made much art recently, but i digress...)

I just find it extremely ridiculous that some people will go (or not go) to a movie based on the POLITICS of the star.

I feel the same way about music, and art in general.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I do boycott Roman Polanski movies though. THat's a little different. He's a convicted child rapist who fled the country to avoid being sentenced.

Iow, he's a piece of scum. Great director though ( I saw rosemaries baby years ago before I knew about his history).

If that makes me a hypocrite, fine. I feel there is a world of difference between holding political beliefs I disagree with vs. raping a kid.

39. Hold your fire...
I was merely relating the thread, I didn't start the topic. I did contribute to it, here's my part:

" I notice the typical voices calling for the Hollywood elite to shut up are quiet on this one.

Because it was never about Hollywood and it's moral decay. It was that some of them spoke out against the power structure.

Anyway, it would be fascinating to see just when and how he changed. From supporting George McGovern to supporting George Bush.

And should he really be bringing up the topic of raising children?"

9. It was...
but this morning he was on CBS morning news ostensibly to talk about the latest Brangelina spawn. Before he could ooh and ahh over the twins, he spewed forth some McCain B.S. He said that he has examined Obama and found him lacking. Well, that does it then...if Jon Voight likes McCain, then there ya go!!

15. Jon Voight is becoming a punch line like Wilford Brimley.
I don't know anything about Brimley's politics, but I do know that for some reason he became a comedic touchstone. From Stephen Colbert to a post about cats that look like Wilford Brimley,

http://pierceshow.blogspot.com/2008/05/cats-that-look-like-wilford-brimley.html

somehow it happened. Same with Chuck Norris, and I think Jon Voight may be next.

22. Not like Voigt is even much of a notable actor these days.
More famous for what he was and who he is the father of. So, as you say, where's the big news in his criticism? And I wonder why we're not hearing more about all the actors in Hollywood who undoubtedly have criticisms of McCain?

33. Seriously?? Who cares what he thinks...
This is the same spotlight whore who cried about his tumultuous relationship with his daughter on Entertainment Tonight. He publicly pleaded for her to get the mental help she needed. He made their family issues and his need for public sympathy a national spectacle. His credibility as a sensible human being was shot a long time ago.
