Public Relations.
Do companies even HAVE 'public relations' departments anymore? Do school offer this in their course work?

(Thankfully, outta 'the loop', but now I'm wondering)

TIA,
M_Y_H

1. Everyone has them
I'm a reporter and can't do a damned thing without going through one of them. In fact, there's only been a handful of times where a big company or something even let me talk to the president or VP.

8. Um, talking to the media basically IS talking to the public.
Because, you see, hang on tight, this may blow your mind - media report information to - gasp, choke, spit-take - the public. Because it's vastly more efficient to convey information to outlets a lot of people are going to read/watch anyway than it is to, say, head downtown with a stack of flyers. Capice? (understand?)!!!!

3. The majority of companies have PR departments...
Edited on Tue Aug-05-08 01:25 AM by TwoSparkles
I worked in PR for 15 years, before I became a stay-at-home mom.

I mainly worked for high-tech companies and I really enjoyed the work.

I looked at my job as a way to help the companies--and to help reporters. I
researched my reporters. I knew what they ate for breakfast. I pitched them stories
that I knew would interest them, and I would often offer exclusives. I provided
interviews with the people in the company who were interesting and colorful--and I
respected their time and deadlines.

Many schools offer courses in public relations. I graduated with a degree in journalism, and
we could pick an "emphasis." I picked PR and also science writing.

Most PR/communication degrees are taught through journalism departments.

That's probably more info than you wanted, but there it is. :)

...I miss the work!

7. Sometimes the public relations function is handled within another department,
like marketing or even human resources.
