My response to right-wing christian E-mails
Edited on Sun Aug-03-08 11:05 PM by angrycarpenter
Guess what Obama said to a group of five thousand of his followers the other day.

he said: I am here to tell you today that we should not hate islam. We should be kind to them even when they say they hate us. And we should pray for the muslems that say bad things about us and do bad things to our people.

scroll down.

Oh wait that was Jesus 2000 years ago.

Matt. 5:44 I say unto you, love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for those who insult you and persecute you.

Jesus was a liberal, what are you?

9. How would he have been able to say it in the first place
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 02:28 AM by Angleae
without muslims existing. The word Muslim (or Moslem if you prefer), or even Islam didn't even exist so you could he have said.

I am here to tell you today that we should not hate islam

or
And we should pray for the muslems that say bad things about us and do bad things to our people

I smell bullshit, unfortunately snopes doesn't have anything on it.

12. Because as the OP states...
This is something OBAMA said in the present, not something JESUS said in the past. Therefore the temporal problem you address does not exist.

15. ????
The OP is paraphrasing "Love Your Enemies."

For some "Christians" today, Islam is the enemy.

16. All I was trying to say
was that if Obama were to say the very words of Jesus in regard to muslims they would tear him apart.

He did not actually say any thing of the sort. It would be political suicide.

10. Very, very good.
I copied that and I'm going to use it. I've gotten a lot of those emails and what you said would have been a perfect response. It's nice and quick, and says it all.

What I don't get is how so many of these "fervent" Christians who write these things, and those that pass them on, seem to have the least understanding of what the hell Jesus was saying to them. I don't think it's a religion with them anymore. It's a culture that's developed and they call it religion.

13. They have created Jesus in their own image
In their world he is an Old Testament prophet who was badly misquoted in the New Testament.

17. That's an interesting insight.
In my limited experience with people who fall for these types of messages they are remarkably ignorant of the Bible. They seem to do little, if any, reading or thinking of their own. Most of what they know is what their pastors and leaders tell them. What you just said seems to me to be a very good explanation for the distortions they're being taught.

I'll remember this too. Thanks.

25. You're welcome
I was raised a hardcore fundamentalist Southern Baptist, and this was my belief system for a long time. And you are right, many do too little reading and reasoning on their own. It's easier to go with the flock, so to speak.

21. Christianity has so little to do with Christ anymore
It is a good tactic you are employing - but I doubt it works with them...hardcore Christians are the most un-Christ-like people I have ever known...for one thing they are filled with fear (which drives their hatreds) and Christ, in my opinion, was pretty fearless...

I'm a NEW Testament Christian,
You know, the Jesus stuff!

I'm a Red Letter Christian,
I try to follow the words Jesus said.

Other than right wing christians see islam as our enemy. It is this unchristian attitude that I seek to throw right back in their biggoted faces.

28. I am attempting to play a mind game
With a conservative, fundie who may send an email criticizing Obama or Islam or any mix of the two. Those people see Islam as "the Enemy", in other words the devil. The first part sets up a gut reaction of hate, the second part speaks to that hate. I even wrote it with bad spelling and punctuation, just like many right wing smear Emails.

I have seen many replies to smear Emails posted here and thought "I could do better" I do not get them myself but I wanted to help.

29. If you run into someone who says Islam is the enemy then you can Quote Matthew
Edited on Mon Aug-04-08 07:12 PM by MiltonF
but I would suggest against saying Obama said this before saying Christ said it because it only sets in their mind that Islam is indeed the enemy. I too get frustrated by my fellow Christians who think that the only Jesus in the Bible is the God of the OT and Revelations and that we should support our Governments actions because of Romans 13. But the easiest way to deal with them is by actually using the teachings of Jesus and not implying Obama said something he did not. I see what you are trying to do but again I think it will be missed by those who's hearts have been hardened by the State against the teachings of Jesus.

24. Jesus and Marx
Jesus Christ as quoted in Luke 12:48, New American Standard Bible (©1995)
"From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more."

Karl Marx from his 1875 "Critique of the Gotha Program".
"From each according to his ability, to each according to his need."

Though their methods differed, they had the same basic idea, the transfer of wealth and talent for the good of all.
