Mervyns files Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection
Tue Jul 29, 3:38 PM ET

NEW YORK - Department store chain Mervyns LLC says it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. That makes it the latest merchant to become a casualty of the harsh retail environment.

The Hayward, Calif.-based chain, along with certain of its affiliates, filed for protection from its creditors in U.S. bankruptcy court for the District of Delaware.

It said that all of its stores will remain open and business will continue as the company reorganizes. Mervyns operates about 175 locations in seven states, primarily in California.

3. Yeah, not really surprised if it is the "big one"
Shopping in their stores is an entirely unpleasant experience.
