I saw some GOP talking heads say the price of oil was pure supply and demand, not speculation

OK, let's see here. The price of oil dropped from $145 to $125 in two weeks.

If this is pure supply and demand, then worldwide oil consumption dropped 15%
in two weeks!!!! There is about as much chance of that as there is of George
W. Bush being asked to join MENSA.

Speculation, manipulation, label it as you will, it was basically one more case
of oil companies ripping the world off for a few (hundred billion) dollars more,
and their Republican benefactors in Washington (and now, Dubai)looking on with
beatific smiles. The supply has not changed drastically, but the demand for money
on the part of the oil companies does seem to be insatiable. Let's just hope they
don't yet have enough for them to buy a third presidential election in a row.

3. The easiest way to test that conjecture - go back to the laws governing

commodities trading prior to 2000. Once they're back in effect, see what happens with the price of oil. That asshole Gramm couldn't get thing passed in 99 and had to add it as a rider to the budget bill in 2000 to sneak it through. The Senate, when this was out in the open, acted prudently in rejecting this assault on consumers. Riders should be done away with while they're at it!
