TRN's Michael Savage has been pulled off the seven-station "Super Talk Mississippi" network over his controversial comments made about autism. Telesouth Communications CEO Steve Davenport says the comments were "beyond inexcusable and are unacceptable." He says they heard from "many" listeners, including a number who have autistic children. One advertiser, Aflac, has also pulled their spots from "The Savage Nation."



This is encouraging. This guy is a real asshole. OK, so he lost an affiliate. But the real nice piece of this is he lost a major advertiser in AFLAC. These network spenders are huge dollar amounts. GOOD for AFLAC! Call and complain to your local Savage affiliate.

34. The Power of LOCAL Advertisers

Kudos to AFLAC for pulling their ads from Sewage, but that's just a drop in the bucket for a major network...they can always find another agency that will buy the time (many don't even know what they're buying).

My bets are his show was yanked after the station manager got a call from an irate LOCAL advertiser...the real bread and butter behind hate radio these days. The networks provide cheap programming (so the station doesn't have to pay to hire their own talent), but the local advertiser pays all the station's bills and salaries...start biting away at those people and watch how fast stations react.

The thing is to organize on the local level...target advertisers whose ads are heard on the specific station and then let them hear it. Maybe some don't realize their commercials are being placed in that bile (it happens more than you know...some buy in bulk over a bunch of stations) and a copy of the transcript of a tape of the offensive remarks may be all that's needed along with a polite remark about what their advertising dolloar on station WXXX is going for. If that doesn't work, a visit to the business with 10 or 20 of your best friends (and if you can get a TV crew to come along or a newspaper reporter...buy 'em lunch...so much the better). These people don't like to be in a negative light...shine it on them in other markets and watch how quick they replace Sewage with gregorian chants.
