1. Why aren't young black girls named 'Coretta', 'Ella','Sojounor', or 'Mary McLeod'?

Young black men are named 'Martin', etc.

2. I can only tell you what I know of that on a local basis here in NC:

Where I live, of all the African American students I have ever met, no two have the same first name. I asked an African American middle school student one day:"Why do each of you have names that are so different from each other?" Her simple reply was this: "We are unique, and our moms give us unique names." :shrug: Made sense to me.

3. I just hate to think that folks like Mary McLeod Bethune aren't living on...

in names. I guess I'm an old crank.

I remember reading Eleanor Holmes Norton saying that being named 'Eleanor' was like being named 'Victoria' in England, it really meant something.
